The Yemenis could escalate much further. They could target refineries and pipelines, or shut down the Bab al-Mandab Strait entirely. Instead, they are targeting Saudi shipping and ports — enough to make their point, but not enough to turn the whole world against them. Let me clarify a very important matter. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with its majority Sunni population, which is known to the world as one of the largest countries representing Sunni Islam and its leader, has for many years been instilling fear and anxiety among Arab and Islamic populations about the danger of Iran, to the point where it has become ingrained in the minds of Arab and Islamic populations that Iran is a threat to them and their Islam. However, since the beginning of the Gaza events, we have not seen any Saudi stance in support of Gaza's Sunnis, nor have we seen any popular protests from them, nor have we seen any Saudi citizen within Saudi Arabia expressing sorrow and supporting the Palestinians. Today, I was deeply moved by the feelings of Iranian citizens, most of whom are Shia, who are mourning the martyrdom of their "guest" (as they call him), the martyr Ismail Haniyeh, the Sunni, their great reverence for him, and their large crowds that came out for his funeral. They are vowing to continue supporting the Palestinians and the Palestinian cause, no matter the cost.

Houthis are warning Saudi ships not to transit the Red Sea / Gulf of Aden. Some initial thoughts: Initial indications are that this blockade applies only to ships that are owned by a Saudi company or are Saudi Arabia-flagged. At the moment, this does not suggest that Saudi ports are likely to be targeted, nor does it suggest that ships calling at Saudi ports are at increased risk. It does however starve Saudi Arabia of direct access to the Asian markets. The BaM is Saudi’s gateway to Asia without having to circumnavigate the whole African continent. We cannot just assume though, that because the Houthis did not explicitly call out Saudi ports, that this threat does not apply to them. The Houthis have the capability to target both Saudi Red Sea and Gulf ports, and are not always forthcoming with information before the implementation of a new target profile (Magic Seas/Eternity C). Saudi is relying on Yanbu to export oil via East-West pipeline due to SoH cargo volumes being significantly reduced. Yanbu is a huge vulnerability in the global oil market should the Houthis choose to attack. We must also see how KSA responds. The RSAF struck Sana’a last week which appears to be a shift away from their normal restraint and could suggest the Saudis are ready for another confrontation with the Houthis. It is likely that the Houthis are retaining escalation such as KSA ports, ships calling KSA etc to respond to any potential Saudi response.

Speaking to Al Mayadeen on Monday, Professor Mohammad Marandi said that Yemen has the ability to inflict “far greater damage” on Saudi Arabia than Riyadh can inflict on Yemen. He explained that Saudi Arabia has major and costly infrastructure, including oil facilities, whose destruction or damage would severely impact its economy. Yemen, however, “because of years of siege and because of the genocidal war,” does not have similarly expensive infrastructure that could be targeted. Pakistan is not reliable at all and is willing to sustain the Islamic regime in Iran’s terrorism. Pakistan did not condemn Iran’s aggression against the UAE, Bahrain, and other Muslim countries. In negotiations with the Trump administration, Pakistan refused to ask Iran to stop attacking the Gulf states. Pakistan wants to be the oxygen for the Islamic regime. Saudi Arabia is making an agreement with Pakistan that will not provide protection; Islamabad will simply take funds and share some with the Islamic regime in Iran..it is essentially bribing terrorism not to attack you. That will not happen with the UAE. The UAE does not negotiate with terrorists.
