Sometimes, a coach loses a game, much less a regional final, and they're ready to hit the showers, hit the road, and not talk much. It was refreshing to see Louisiana's Head Coach Matt Deggs, who'd just lost 19-5 to Mississippi State, after playing in mid 90s temps earlier in the afternoon just to get the opportunity, willing to talk about the game, his team, and even his expectations for next year. If you're fans of Mississippi State and its Head Coach Brian O' Connor, he will remind you of the same candor, plain-spoken-but-well-spoken type of coach who has both affection for his players but expectations of what he asks and demands of them. This is a coach whose team survived multiple elimination games at the Sun Belt tournament, played at all hours and even multiple locations last week, winding up in the championship game. And when offered a chance to deflect the lopsided score with the drain his team might have faced having only a short while after gutting out a win over 2-seed Cincinnati 8-6, he said his team wasn't tired, though. They just ran out of pitching. And, his analogy that "they were going to have to kill us, and they did" was a tip of the cap to his opponent, whom he deemed worthy of a long run in Omaha. Anyway, let's let Coach Deggs say that, and so much more, in his own words. Write it down now, they look like a team to watch in the Sun Belt for 2027. And, since this was the last game of the Starkville Regional, we'll remind you again the video is courtesy of NCAA Baseball and Mississippi State Baseball, with additional editing by College Baseball Central.

On this date 22 years ago on March 20, 2004, Alabama Menโ€™s Basketball delivered one of the most stunning NCAA Tournament upsets in program history, rallying from a 13-point second-half deficit to take down No. 1 seed Stanford, 70-67, in Seattle. The eighth-seeded Crimson Tide looked dead in the water midway through the second half. Stanford, powered by Pac-10 Player of the Year Josh Childress and carrying a dominant 30-1 record, had built a 53-40 lead with just 7:40 remaining. Everything pointed toward a routine closeout by the top seed. Then came the surge that Alabama fans still talk about today. The Tide flipped the game on its head with a breathtaking 16-0 run, turning a double-digit deficit into a lead in a matter of minutes. The momentum inside the arena shifted completely as Alabamaโ€™s defense tightened and Stanford suddenly had no answers. Kennedy Winston led the charge with 21 points, while Earnest Shelton poured in 14 to help ignite the comeback. Chuck Davis and Antoine Pettway each added 12 points, and Alabama showed poise at the lineโ€”knocking down 10 of 14 free throws in the closing minutes to seal the upset. Childress, held to 12 points, fouled out with 3:18 remaining and could only watch from the bench as the Tide completed the shocker. In the Alabama locker room afterward, a sign summed it up perfectly: โ€œThey werenโ€™t overrated. We were underrated.โ€ The victory sent shockwaves across college basketball, landing Alabama on the cover of Sports Illustrated and propelling the program to its first Sweet Sixteen appearance since 1991โ€”a moment that still stands as one of the defining wins of the modern era of Crimson Tide basketball.

On this date 43 years ago, Alabama Menโ€™s Basketball delivered one of the most emotional and historic wins in program history, stunning No. 1 UCLA 70โ€“67 inside Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles on Jan. 28, 1983 โ€” a victory that still echoes across Crimson Tide lore. The teams played just hours after the burial of legendary Alabama Football coach Paul โ€œBearโ€ Bryant, who died two days earlier on Jan. 26, 1983. What should have been just another showdown of two top college basketball teams instead became a moment of statewide catharsis and pride. Head coach Wimp Sanderson led his team after receiving encouragement from the Bryant family to still play the game. Wearing black memorial patches on its uniforms, the Crimson Tide took the floor carrying the weight of grief โ€” and the determination to honor a legend. Alabama never trailed and even built a 16-point lead before UCLA stormed back to tie the game late. But in the closing seconds, Mike Davis and Buck Johnson knocked down three clutch free throws to seal one of the greatest road wins in program history. Bobby Lee Hurt led the Tide with 23 points, while Ennis Whatley added 20, giving Alabama the firepower to outlast college basketballโ€™s most iconic program on its home floor. Years later on a Tide Hoops History podcast, Ennis Whatley called the win one of the defining moments of his career, saying it was โ€œa high accomplishment for me, for our team and for the state of Alabamaโ€ during a time of profound emotion. Though the 1982-83 season would later unravel in SEC play, this night remains immortal โ€” and Sanderson still stands as the only Alabama head coach with a winning record against No. 1 teams โ€” forever tied to a victory that honored Bear Bryant in the most powerful way possible.

SGAโ€™S EXCELLENCE: FUELING OKCโ€™S DOMINANCE & AN MVP CAMPAIGN โ€œThat was a masterpiece,โ€ said Thunder coach Mark Daigneault after Shai Gilgeous-Alexanderโ€™s 45-point outburst in Thursdayโ€™s win over Indiana. โ€œShai was outstanding โ€ฆ He was at his own pace the entire night. Great blend of passing and attacking. Great blend of shooting and attacking. He just had total control of the wheel.โ€ SGAโ€™s masterful outing extended the Thunderโ€™s league-best win streak to nine games. Tonight, OKC will face Charlotte (6 PM ET, NBA TV), looking to match its longest win streak in a single season since 2013-14 โ€” with Gilgeous-Alexander firmly in the driverโ€™s seat. MVP Level: Ranked third on the Kia NBA MVP Ladder, SGA (31.1 ppg, 6.1 apg, 2.0 spg) is the only player in the league averaging 30+ points, 6+ assists and 2+ steals. Leveling Up: Amid the win streak, heโ€™s elevated his game, averaging an NBA-best 33.8 points and 2.6 steals while raising both his FG% (54.2) and 3P% (37.3). In Thursdayโ€™s win, SGA shot 15-of-22 (68.2%) from the floor, 4-of-5 from deep (80%) and 11-for-11 (100%) from the line, becoming just the fourth player in NBA history to score 45+ points on 65/80/100 shooting splits or better. One game prior, he dropped 41 points with three steals and three blocks โ€” a feat no other player has accomplished this season โ€” proving his impact extends well beyond scoring. Since 2018-19, his first NBA season, SGA leads all players in 30+ point, 3+ steal games with 39. In that same span, he ranks first among guards in games of 3+ blocks and 3+ steals with seven. This season, SGA leads the Thunder in total steals (57) and blocks (32), and 72% of their forced turnovers come when heโ€™s on the floor. His all-around excellence drives OKCโ€™s success on both ends โ€” at an unprecedented level โ€” as itโ€™s on pace to become the first team to record more steals than turnovers since turnovers were first tracked in 1977-78. โ€œThereโ€™s two sides of the ball on every possession,โ€ said SGA after Mondayโ€™s win. โ€œI try to affect the game anywhere I can on every possession and help my team win.โ€ Tonight, the Thunder will not only look to match their longest single-season win streak since 2013-14 but also equal their best 30-game start since moving to Oklahoma City with 25 wins โ€” a mark set by the โ€™13-14 squad. That team was led by Kevin Durant, who went on to win that seasonโ€™s Kia NBA MVP. Eleven years later, OKC has another MVP-caliber player leading a historic start.
