Growing up, three things shaped me early on: patriotism, history, and a deep appreciation for those who came before us. Elementary school in Texas fostered my love of American history and patriotism. Later, attending school in Pennsylvania meant early mornings playing The Oregon Trail with my friends, planting a seed of fascination with the settling of the American West. And being raised in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gave me a deep appreciation for family history, genealogy, and the sacrifices of the pioneers. So when I finally stood at the wagon ruts in Guernsey, Wyoming, it felt like all of those threads came together. Running my hand over grooves carved by thousands of wagon wheels and standing where so many pioneers once walked was far more moving than I ever expected. It truly felt like walking on hallowed ground.

Today is the 50th anniversary of “Jaws”. Steven Spielberg’s film made the summer blockbuster and was a masterclass in creating suspense in a monster thriller. We don’t see the shark until 81st minute of the 124-minute film (65% way in). It was a stroke of luck: the original script had a lot more shark in it but Spielberg’s shark animatronic kept breaking down. The electric wiring shortcircuited in the ocean saltwater off of Martha’s Vineyard. So, Spielberg found other ways to “show” the shark (filming from POV of shark in water or people’s terrified reactions). As the saying goes, “constraints breed creativity”. In a 60 Minutes interview, Spielberg explained how the failed animatronic made the film better: ▫️ “I decided to shoot without the shark and it increased, or torqued up the suspense of the movie because you really didn’t know where it would come from next. So, rather than seeing the shark in every scene, I played a lot of the fear from the people in the water. From seeing their legs kicking. From the POV of the camera moving along the surface of the water. That turned the movie into more of an exercise in suspense than just a horror film [With a working shark], I probably wouldn’t have had a movie as successful.” ▫️ The 1975 film made $470m on a $9m budget and became top-grossing film ever (before “Star Wars” knocked it off in 1977). Spielberg did the exact same playbook with the T-Rex in 1993’s “Jurassic Park”: we don’t see the apex dinosaurs until the 63rd minute of the 127-minute film (50% way in). This also became the top-grossing film ever at the time (~$1B box office). If we have food security in India today, then in large measure we owe it this man—M.S.Swaminathan, fondly known as the ‘Father of the Green Revolution.’ Given our deep links with agriculture, we presented him with the Agri-Icon of the year award at the Mahindra Samriddhi Awards in 2011. Speaking to him over dinner on that day is one of my hallmark memories. He maintained his enthusiasm & encouragement of our Awards and in 2019, though frail, recorded a video for us which I have shared. His profound wisdom & passion for agriculture made the lives of 1.4 billion Indians more secure. He passed away on September 28th but wherever he is, the fields around him will be more fertile. Its position today is favorable for observation and gives us a good chance, provided these clouds do not persist. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "If it is obscured from you, then complete the month as thirty days." Our responsibility at the astronomical observatory is to report our findings. If we see the crescent, we inform the relevant authorities. If we do not see it, we also report that no sighting was made. They are responsible for the rest of the decisions. If the crescent moon is sighted, what is the procedure, Abu Fadi? The first step is to document the sighting in an official report, recording each observer's details, the method of sighting, the shape of the crescent, its position relative to the sun, and its altitude. In August 2023, while inaugurating the second phase of the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme in Madurai district, Dr. Dr P Thiaga Rajan (PTR) interacted with Vishva, a Class VII student at the Government Kallar School in Muthupatti. During the interaction, he realised that while students up to Class V were covered under the scheme, many older students studying on the same campus continued to begin their school day without breakfast. Having himself studied in a boarding school, Dr. PTR understood the discomfort this could create among students and resolved that every child studying on the same campus should benefit from the scheme. After learning that 28 of Madurai Corporation's 64 schools had primary and upper-grade students studying on the same campus, Dr. PTR immediately requested the Corporation to pass a resolution extending breakfast support to all students in these schools, without placing any additional financial burden on the Corporation. He also directed officials to estimate the additional expenditure and personally mobilised CSR support, enabling the expansion to be implemented across all 28 schools within just 22 days. Today, an additional 1,350 students from Classes VI to XII receive breakfast every school day under this initiative. The programme continued with the same vendors, ensuring uniform quality of meals while also providing sufficient food for teaching and non-teaching staff. The success of the Madurai model was later reflected in the DMK's 2026 Election Manifesto, which included expanding the Chief Minister's Breakfast Scheme as a statewide commitment. 1. CDC scientists colluded to cover up a relationship between the timing of the MMR vaccine and autism in African Americans that was first discovered in November of 2001. Rather than reporting the results to the public, all data regarding this relationship were destroyed at a secret meeting held some time in August/September of 2002. This fact has been affirmed via an affidavit given by Dr. Thompson to Rep. Bill Posey in September, 2014. 2. Dr. Thompson attempted to warn the CDC Director at the time, Dr. Julie Gerberding, regarding this relationship, prior to the February 2004 Institute of Medicine meeting on vaccines and autism. Rather than allowing Dr. Thompson to present the information at this meeting, Dr. Gerberding replaced him as a speaker with Dr. Frank Destefano, current director of the CDC’s Immunization Safety Office, where he presented fraudulent results regarding the MMR vaccine and autism. Dr. Thompson was put on administrative leave and was threatened that he would be fired due to “insubordination.” 3. When Dr. Thompson attempted to leave the CDC later that same year, he was given a $24,000 retention bonus. Dr. Thompson’s impression of the timing of this bonus, in light of disciplinary actions taken against him earlier that year, is that CDC officials were “buying his silence” through controlling his actions as a CDC employee. 4. Dr. Thompson has published two papers linking thimerosal exposure in infant vaccines to tics in boys (Thompson et al. 2007 and Barile et al. 2012).
