2025 SS Lucas Franco Lucas Franco | Brett Wallace An extended look at the TCU Baseball recruit from yesterday. Here is his I/O and his swings from in game. He had a lot of opportunities defensively in game, and handled them all with ease. Showed the ability to come in well. Had a big swing in a big moment to give his team the lead for the moment. To me, this is hitting. Look at his approach. Adjustability. Short. Uses the whole field. Can also drive the ball. Hits the ball where it’s pitched. Tough out. We need way more of this in our game. Imagine a line up with 6 or 7 of these dudes! And two power bats (that swing and miss more often) but hit more long balls… now that is baseball. When I teach hitting to young players, this is more of my focus. Become a great hitter first and the power comes later… when you develop your man body. I often feel like the dialogue around Derik Queen, is that he doesn’t provide spacing as a shooter, so he is talked about as a more traditional back to the basket guy. And while I think his footwork on the block is sick, Queen is also a pretty devastating slasher from the perimeter— utilizing the same sick footwork, a tight handle, long smooth strides, the ability to handle contact, and the ability to finish with power or touch. So even if he isn’t stretching the floor yet, Queen can still attack space comfortably, as he’s able to take advantage when teams send two to the ball, make quick decisions when the ball swings his way on the weakside, or just straight up use his handle to beat dudes off the bounce. Yes, he’s a big bodied dude, but he’s quick and agile and when placed in an ecosystem with even more space at the next level, I think he’s going to prove super versatile in how teams can utilize him in different parts of the floor.

He was a disaster his first year, like, can this guy play in the league? There were a bunch of guys in that bucket. We had the luxury of being able to throw them out there, though. There’s no better development road than that… This seems similar here where they’re like, ok, the best way to do this is get these guys in an NBA game and take their lumps and they’ll learn. And then year two they get a little better and then year three you hope you’re in the playoff hunt. I would think that’s the roadmap.”

Very excited to watch OF Carson Benge (OSU Cowboy Baseball) this spring. Enjoyed an excellent first full season in 2023, hitting .345 with 17 2B, 7 HR, 43 RBI, and more BB (42) than K (32). Hit .345 with 4 RBI in a 9-game stint on the Cape. Wiry and athletic frame at 6'1", 184-pounds. Serious violence in his swing that is geared towards doing damage and getting the ball in the air. Plenty of hand speed, does a nice job consistently generating back spin. Impressive ability driving the baseball to all fields. Sound approach, above average bat-to-ball skills. Big barrel tip, but consistently on time and gets in a good position to hit. Absolutely pulverizes heaters - .529/.691/.824 slash line against FB 91+. Good athlete with a plus arm in RF that will allow him to stick at the position. Also has some experience on the mound where he showed feel to spin and a FB up to 96. Plays the game extremely hard and at one speed. It is abundantly clear that he loves to play! Potential top-2 round selection this July.
