A SECOND PLANE HAS HIT THE SECOND TOWER - AMERICA IS UNDER ATTACK

The North Tower of the World Trade Center collapses. The Marriot Hotel, a separate building located at the base of the tower, is also destroyed. A 40-story portion of the building stands for several seconds after the collapse, then falls. Perhaps 20,000 people are dead.

Reverend Billy Graham leads a memorial service at Washington National Cathedral. President Bush and other government officials are in attendance. The service is nationally-broadcast.

The FDNY issues a total recall, ordering all off-duty firefighters to report immediately. But they’re in for an uphill climb, literally, as they must scale 90 floors carrying 60 pounds of gear.

In remarks to reporters, President Bush calls the upcoming war a “War on Terror” for the first time. He says that it is going to take awhile.

At 10 AM, US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld held a press conference and announced that the Pentagon has “lost track of” $2.3 trillion, which is “unaccounted for.” He goes on to highlight a number of other glaring inefficiencies in the Department of Defense.
