This might be the pinnacle moment of the strongest El Niño in history. Pacific Super Typhoon Champi is unbelievable by every metric. A buoy just measured a ~909 MBAR pressure at the edge of her 40+ mile-wide eye, which has now reached a blistering dryness of -10.94 C. Her eyewall is a 180+ MPH (290+ kph) buzzsaw of cyclonic violence, and her CDO is a perfect Saturnian ring of icy, -110 F (-80 C) convective thunderstorms. And she is still. Getting. Stronger.

We are about to see one of the largest rain events that’s ever been triggered in the continental United States by a Pacific Hurricane. After making landfall in Baja California, the saturated remnants of former-Category 5 Hurricane Polo are going to inject a massive conveyor belt of deep, tropical moisture up through NW Mexico and into the U.S. South-Central Texas could be at the epicenter of the event, with isolated rain totals potentially reaching up to a FOOT this week.

Category 5 Super Typhoon Champi now has extremely violent sustained winds of 185 MPH (298 kph) and an insane core pressure of 895 MBAR, tying her with Super Typhoon Sinlaku as the world’s STRONGEST storm of 2026 by wind speed. You are looking at a meteorological Megalodon.

The clock is ticking down to Typhoon Champi’s first direct impact to land. Yonaguni, the westernmost island in the nation of Japan, with a small area of 28.88 sq km (11.15 sq mi) but a dense population of 1,684 people, is currently forecast to be the landfall location for Champi tomorrow (she will be at CAT 2 status when she gets there, with 100+ MPH/160 kph gusts possible). One thing to watch out for is unpredictable track alterations caused by Taiwan. If Champi strays too far west, her proximity to the island’s extreme rainforest mountains could induce wobbles that may change the scope/duration of impacts for the areas involved.

Super Typhoon Champi just exploded to a new peak intensity of 180 MPH (290 kph) and 902 MBAR east of the Philippines, becoming one of the most monstrous CATEGORY 5 Typhoons of the decade. This is nearing the upper-edge of what our oceans can create. Not since Typhoon Mawar (2023) have we seen such a massive storm achieve winds this extreme.

What Super Typhoon Champi is doing right now is almost unheard of. We have seen many storms in the West Pacific achieve this kind of extreme intensity before, but few have done so with an eye and eyewall as physically massive as Champi’s. At 185 MPH (298 kph), with gusts likely over 215 MPH (345 kph) and a near-buoy confirmed eye pressure of 895 MBAR, this is one of the most ridiculous cyclonic core structures we have ever seen in the satellite era.

There are moments where our planet shows us how small we are. This is one of those moments. Extremely high-resolution view of mesovortices inside the 895 MBAR Stadium Effect of Super Typhoon Champi right now, as the air rushing into this 35 mile-wide vacuum accelerates the serrated, 50,000 ft high thunderstorms in the eyewall to sustained wind speeds of 185 MPH with gusts up to 225 MPH.

Right now, there are 250 people on Socorro Island, Mexico staring down at the 175 MPH (280 kph) fury of Hurricane Polo to their southeast. The good news here is that the storm is going to curve around the western side of this remote volcanic island, keeping the catastrophic eyewall offshore and avoiding a landfall. Heavy rain, winds, and surf should be the extent of the impacts.

Some of the most terrifying and violent storm conditions that are possible on this planet are occurring right now on the Pacific island of Rota. At 180 MPH (290 kph) and with eyewall mesovortex gusts potentially as high as ~220 MPH (355 kph), Category 5 Super Typhoon Bavi is moments away from making landfall.

It’s very rare for a Hurricane to reach 180 MPH winds at all. It’s almost unheard of for one to reach it TWICE. That’s what Hurricane Polo just did today. Two distinct, completely separate 180 MPH peak intensity phases during completely different stages of the cyclonic life cycle. What we’re seeing take place near Mexico’s Pacific coast this week is nothing short of the meteorologically exceptional.

This is where the flash superflood on the Nepal-Tibet border today first began. From an altitude of 17,000 ft on Langtang Lirung in the Himalayas, a ~2,000 ft-wide chunk of glacier ice snapped off and fell ~4,000 ft to the valley below, generating an impact 6.3% as powerful as the Hiroshima nuclear explosion and causing a Magnitude 5.2 seismic event. Upon impact, this massive ice chunk was then pulverized into a violent 100+ ft-tall surge of glacier water, rocks, and mud that flowed into the nearby Trishuli River. Funneled by Nepal’s extremely steep and jagged terrain, the resulting flood wave became an unsurvivable wall of water and debris for the immediate communities downstream.

This is insane. Former Tropical Storm Edouard made landfall 18 hours ago and yet, not only has his compact structure remained intact, but his convective thunderstorms have actually INTENSIFIED over land. A potentially catastrophic Flash Flood Emergency is now active near Beaumont, Texas, where 20+ IN of rain has already fallen from the storm’s slow-moving rainbands. We are witnessing a textbook Brown Ocean Effect take place this morning.

In a potential worst case scenario for the Mariana Islands, Category 5 Super Typhoon Bavi has exploded to a new peak intensity of 180 MPH (285 kph) sustained winds and a minimum pressure of 901 MBAR. She is now among some of the most powerful superstorms you will see in Earth’s oceans, and exceptionally life-threatening conditions are only hours away from ripping through the island of Rota.
