It is absolute chaos in the West Pacific right now. Typhoon Dolphin making landfall in China; Tropical Storm Chan-hom heading towards mainland Japan; and THREE MORE systems spinning around the Mariana Islands, all at the same time.

NOAA’s Hurricane Hunters just recorded a surface wind gust of ~190 MPH inside the eyewall of Hurricane Polo, while a deployed drone flying at 500 meters above sea-level measured winds exceeding 230 MPH. We are watching one of the all-time most extreme Western Hemisphere storms on record unfold before our eyes tonight.

UPDATE: Category 5 Super Typhoon Ragasa (NandoPH) has just hit a new peak intensity of 180 MPH sustained winds and a minimum central pressure of 905 MBAR. This intensity is approaching the upper limits of what Earth is capable of producing.

The 165 MPH eyewall of Hurricane Polo is electrified with heavy lightning activity, peaking moments ago with a rate of up to ~600 strikes PER HOUR. Sinking air trapped inside the storm’s extremely steep Stadium Effect has now reached a searing -10.6 C, the warmest Polo’s eye has ever been. Combined with a circular, buzzsaw-shaped CDO of -73 C (-100 F) cloud tops, it appears this Hurricane unbelievably is STILL intensifying.

The situation is growing more serious for Hawaii tonight as Tropical Storm Lala continues to organize. If the NHC’s current forecast holds, then she will become the first Hurricane in 155 YEARS to strike the Big Island (where 1-2 FEET of life-threatening rainfall is possible).

This is an exceedingly rare satellite loop for the East Pacific. Last night, Hurricanes Polo and Odalys rapidly intensified SIMULTANEOUSLY within just 1,000 miles of each other, reaching 180 MPH and 130 MPH peak strengths at exactly the same time. El Niño-fueled hyperactivity.

150 MPH (240 kph) Hurricane Simon is set to strike Jalisco, Mexico in what could be the strongest Pacific Hurricane landfall since Otis in 2023. Major population centers will fortunately be spared from devastating Category 4 winds (even if Simon makes landfall at that intensity), but the inland mountain towns south of Puerto Vallarta could still endure damaging Hurricane-force gusts and flooding mudslides as the storm drives northward.

BREAKING: Category 5 Hurricane Melissa’s sustained winds are now roaring at 175 MPH, and the air pressure in her searing eye has sunk to 906 MBAR. The storm is starting to take the northern turn towards Jamaica, and if she intensifies any further, she will begin to approach the mathematical limits of how strong a storm can become in this part of the world.

It may seem impossible, but another Major Hurricane (yes, actually) is set to form in the East Pacific and threaten the coast of Mexico. What’s concerning about this next storm (whom will be named VANCE) is that he is forming to the south of the cold wakes stirred up by Hurricanes Polo, Rachel, Simon, and Trudy. This could allow for very rapid intensification over untapped waters before a potential recurve into Mexico. Weakening would be likely in any sort of landfall scenario, and it’s still very early to know anything for sure, but this future storm appears to be one that needs to be watched closely.

The worst case scenario has been soundly avoided with Hurricane Simon, as he has missed landfall in Jalisco entirely. Regrettably however, the storm is not done with Mexico yet. As Simon passes by Puerto Vallarta, he is forecast to recurve eastward into Sinaloa, where he could make landfall as a weakening Category 1 Hurricane on Wednesday afternoon. If you are in the city of Mazatlán, monitor all official updates from the NHC.

Hurricane Lala is producing some of the most bizarre storm conditions you will ever see on Hawaii’s Big Island. At the summit of Mauna Kea, which rises 13,824 ft above sea level, a whiteout of tropical rain is being propelled by winds up to 140 MPH at an icy temperature of 38 F.

The amount of convective available potential energy over the Middle East on Thursday is enough for a textbook hatchery of supercell thunderstorms. Where this unstable mass of nearly 5,000 J/kg of CAPE intersects with the dip in the jet stream will determine the greatest threat area for desert tornadoes (most likely in the UAE, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia) and/or strong marine waterspouts over the Persian Gulf.

A new Tropical Depression has formed in the footsteps of Hurricane Polo, and another one is about to form far to the SE of Hurricane Nolo and Hawaii. The entire East and Central Pacific is swarming with tropical activity.

Hurricane Karina is the latest storm to bloom in an El Niño-fueled Pacific Ocean. In just over 20 hours, she’s gone from a Tropical Storm to a 125 MPH CAT 3, ~950 miles SW of Baja California. She could be one of THREE simultaneous Pacific Hurricanes that are expected to be active this week.

Hurricane Simon has started to rake the coastline of Mexico as a 145 MPH (235 kph) Category 4. With dramatic western shifts continuing, the storm is now no longer expected to make landfall today; however, dangerous surging surf, heavy rain, and Hurricane-force gusts are still expected for coastal communities in Jalisco.

At this time in 2024, the Philippines were in the midst of a 10-DAY span in which they were struck by FOUR consecutive Typhoons. Now this year, the country is reeling from the effects of Kalmaegi (TinoPH) and Fung-wong (UwanPH) both making landfall within the last 5 days.

A Hurricane is producing SNOW at the summit of the 2nd tallest island on Earth, where wind gusts are exceeding 130 MPH, in a place that hasn’t experienced a Hurricane-strength storm since almost the American Civil War. Unreal what is happening in Hawaii right now.
