Ever notice how Adriana's name is never mentioned? It’s more about her relation to all these people. Not “don’t hit Adriana,” it’s “don’t hit my niece.” When she’s your wife, you can. It’s essentially explaining where she falls in the hierarchy between Christopher and Richie and the rules associated with that, as opposed to Richie caring about her being hit. Adriana's got nuttin to do with it. The writing is insane.

Chris and Sil can't kill Jimmy if he's wearing a wire, so the writers have to communicate to the viewer that he isn't wearing one in this scene in order for the killing to make sense. But the genius of the writing is that they reveal the information in a way that the viewer barely notices. Jimmy is nervous to make a good impression on the Russian girls; he's naturally thinking about his appearance and what they'll think of him, and in that context it makes perfect sense for his character to complain to Chrissie "hey you didn't let me put on anything decent". And that is flawless exposition because it literally disappears into the scene - it flows so completely with the conversation that there's no reason to consider its significance until Sil appears and Chrissie repeats Jimmy's words. Like I've literally watched this scene before more than once, I knew exactly how it ended, and the line "you didn't let me put on anything decent" STILL went over my head just because of how much it makes sense in the context of the conversation they're having. It's masterful.

The way Tony turned it all back on Johnny by making him reveal his source was a masterstroke in negotiation. And he had every right to play that card. The beauty is, Tony is covering up for Ralph because he was right there laughing at the joke. So it's his ass out there on the line as well. But he knows Johnny can't play his Ace card. And then, when Tony proposes Johnny Sack give up his source (Paulie) in exchange for Ralph, Johnny Sack looks over at Carmine. Carmine is saying, “Hell no, don’t give up our source in his crew, because we make a lot of money from Paulie’s big mouth,” and lastly they cut to Sil noticing this between Carmine and Johnny.

Davey really had many chances to not get sucked in further, as much as Tony is blamed. If he thinks for a second what Richie means here... how many guys he already must have seen with a light envelope. This scene is why you can't feel sorry for Davey and how he ended up. The guy was warned about his gambling by both Tony AND Richie and he still went into damnation with both eyes wide open. When Richie Aprile comes off as the reasonable, sober-minded one, you really are going down the road to ruin. And he did.

It makes you realize how small and insignificant the Mafia is in the grand order of things, especially the Jersey Mafia. There are people out there with twelvefold the money and influence of a mob boss like Tony Soprano, and they’re able to accumulate with little to no violence or law enforcement attention. All their talk of “running North Jersey” is just another indication of their limited scope. All that violence and lives lost and Tony's wealth doesn't even come close to those paintings

This is such a great juxtaposition when paired with that final sit down scene where they discuss killing Phil. Here everything is bright, pretty women around, eating lobster and drinking wine Then it is a dark garage where they are given nothing but bottled water bought in bulk from a store. These old school captains were really close to each other as they would actually sit down and talk like real friends. This is what I really loved about this show. The other captains later on didn't even like each other very much

Sometimes I feel that Ralph's entire character was to show how important money was to the mafia. Plenty of people were killed for MUCH MUCH less. The only reason that Ralph was spared, time and time again, was because he made a ton of money for the family. Eventually, he crossed Tony in a way that was naked and unmistakable. Had he kept his disagreements and disdain for Tony low-key, he probably would have been allowed to continue as he had

David Chase wasn't sure James Gandolfini was threatening enough to play Tony Soprano. Gandolfini's manager saw him and thought, "Oh my God, I think I have Tony Soprano." But Chase had a concern, and he named it: "Is he threatening enough?" She shut it down. If you'd said he's a little chubby, or he's losing his hair, I could understand. But he's threatening enough. Tony's version of hell isn't fire. It's his mother During his coma, Tony is trapped in a mysterious dream-world as a man named Kevin Finnerty. He's progressively losing his name, his identity, his memories, and his briefcase before arriving at a glowing house. Tony Blundetto, who we know to be dead, tries to convince him to let go of the briefcase and come inside. A mysterious woman appears on the steps of the Inn We can't be certain the figure is Livia. But we're led to that conclusion because the woman and the setting are so reminiscent of an earlier dream, and Chase all but confirmed that he understood the Dark Woman on the stairs to be Livia Livia did not believe in connections. It wasn't surprising to hear her tell AJ that "in the end, you die in your own arms. It's all a big nothing." For her, life and death were little more than big, meaningless voids. That's the horror waiting inside the house What saves him is Meadow. Her pleas, "Don't go, daddy, we love you," probably more than anything else pull Tony back from whatever precipice he was on. Faced with the choice of following the mysterious woman into the luminous Inn or turning back toward a young girl's voice, Tony chooses the latter. Tony chooses Meadow over Livia

This is why Tony Soprano was the greatest TV character of all time. He murdered a defenceless kid who was screaming for his mother, and yet you still share Tony's sense of relief as hears the news that the witness will no longer testify and the case has collapsed. He was such a complex character, a murdering, adultering, bullying sociopath, but because we understand his flaws we empathise and to a certain extent sympathise with him. Gandolfini was a genius
