Satellite derived 24 hour precipitation map from 20th November to 4th December shows how initially #CycloneSenyar strengthened and dumped a lot of rains over parts of Sumatra and then slowly #CycloneDitwah created havoc over Sri Lanka before moving up along the coast of Peninsular India. 12 years back what started as an instinctive decision. Did not think this journey would continue to chug along like a passenger train. From hand drawn plots using powerpoint to multi model forecast plots now it has been more than a decade of learning. As social media becomes more and more toxic and age catching up not sure how long this journey would continue. Can't but help remember the poem I studied during my school days - The Brook my Lord Tennyson "For men may come and men may go, But I go on forever." Son calls at 2:30 to check if clothes need to be removed from the terrace. I check the radar and say thunderstorms in the west so remove them. Continue my drive to Chennai and did not check the radar subsequently. First sign of thunderstorm when I see a ground strike at distance while crossing Chengalpattu. Skies open up at Guduvanchery. What an intense downpour between Guduvanchery and Tambaram.

The 2 km long traffic jam at Ooty today on the Dodfabetta / Kotagiri road. Fortunately I was in the opposite direction since I was climbing down to the plains from Mudumalai via Ooty. Wondering how bad yesterday afternoon would have been. But full credit to Nilgiris Police who were in full force organizing traffic from Thalaikundha to ensure the traffic was flowing somehow against all odds.
