Footwork. There seems to be a “stutter step” obsession going on in INF drills/training. Are stutter steps sometimes necessary to be on time with feet to field the ball. Yes. But just a few. Not continuous “pitter patter” while approaching the ground ball. Watch Lindor take reps. He does not take thousands of choppy steps to be on time. Often he takes no choppy steps at all…. Point is. In my opinion… The goal of training should be to make drills as game like as possible… unless over exaggeration is needed to combat a major flaw.

HS players…. Ready to play in college? Here is D1 program in Charlotte, NC today. 40 degrees and raining. Cold, wet and damp! On top of that, there game field is not done so they are practicing on a softball field. It’s all about toughness and doing whatever it takes! Brutal…!!! What else can we do with these stupid rules to mess up our great game? So now, as a result, the question has to be asked (from a technical standpoint) … Do we go back to straddling the bag to make the tag, if the throw is online? The hardest part of receiving a throw (in front of the bag), even when you let the ball travel to the glove, is reaching the far backside of the base with a tag. Now…If you can’t adjust your feet at all in front of the base, straddle might become the best option? If I’m a baserunner, I’m sliding head first to the far back corner of these larger bases. …any thoughts? MLB Dirt Bro Diamond Training Taber Mongero

The “Ozzie Drill.” In 1998, I was watching an interview on ESPN with Ozzie Smith, and he talked about his favorite drill…one that he uses to “improve, polish, and trust his glove instincts.” in the drill, Ozzie got on his knees and had a coach “Pepper” him from a short distance, and he had to let his hands work freely to pick or press the short hop or short in-between hop. No thinking … just trust. Get the brain out of the way. Because thinking is slow. I stayed awake at night thinking of ways I could modify this drill to work when working with a group of infielders. It hit me in the middle of one night. Woke up from a dead sleep of a way that we could make the drill very predictable and simplified. Once the foundation of the drill was built and mastered, I could grow the drill and make it unpredictable and much more challenging. ***The video below is a culmination of 26 years of teaching this drill. My son, Taber, grew up doing this drill as a little boy, HS player and college player. This video is him executing the Ozzie drill on his knees and feet when he was playing SS for UNCW. Drag bunt! Just imagine any player doing this against any type of modified shift. It’s there all day long! In my opinion, every hitter from HS and above should have this in their “tool box.” Never know when it might be the solution to a particular game situation. I have always said HS hitters can boost their batting average over .100 points if they know how to drag and push bunt. I would say the same is true for college players…At least .50 points. Not being able to bunt is about as bad as a LH pitcher with a bad pick-off move to 1B. No excuse for it. JS

Fundamental keys of “catch play.” Specifically improving your ability to receive the baseball … using good “actions” to catch the ball. It’s the first thing coaches, recruiters and scouts notice while watching you throw. Do you catch the ball “cleanly? Do you dominate the catch?” And do you develop good habits by moving your feet (within reason) to receive the ball inside your shoulders… which allows for a quicker transition to throw. This is especially important for infielders and catchers. And as simple as this next point might seem, do you know when to catch with 2 hands vs 1? Your team still use a field tarp? Learn how to use the “tarp funneling!” technique … When you don’t want to dump all the water already on the tarp into the outfield grass because it is already saturated. We had a drain over by the dugout and we learned how to get 100% of the water on the tarp into that drain. It was a lifesaver for getting in games … because our OF did not drain good at all.

Texas Rangers MLB Hitting Coach, Tim Hyers, discusses the High Tee Drill and how it helps hitters create a direct swing path needed to consistently handle velocity, with high spin, at the top of the zone. Great hitters know there is big risk involved in creating unnecessary length and depth on the backside of the swing. This is especially true when facing pitchers who throw with superior velocity at top of the zone. Take a listen.

For all the players (at all ages) that spend their entire batting practice “hooking and pulling” everything… Take a look at the video and then listen carefully to Adam Wainwright Adam Wainwright talk about Castellanos’ approach in BP today… hint… not one pitch pulled… everything backside (oppo). Batting practice is a chance to work your swing and focus on “in game approach.” Wish more young players could learn this and work to apply. Become a complete hitter. Elite hands don’t happen by chance. And no matter your starting point, there is always a room for improvement. Find ways to challenge your hand tempo and deflect exchange confidence/speed. Rhythm and repeatability are key elements to each drill. Stay calm, relaxed, & free and easy. When you combine elite, hands, with elite feet, elite arm, and elite internal clock or “instincts,” you become an elite defender who can dominate. Two ball speed exchange (deflect/release). A critical skill used in many parts of infield play. Key on quick release …be sure elbow leads the hand (otherwise it’s a push). Also tilt the upper torso to stay connected with the uphill feed to the wall. Throws must be very accurate (aim small/miss small) to maintain rhythm in drill. Smooth is quick. Start with one ball… master… move to two tennis balls. Maintain integrity of actions. This drill will challenge your hands and reflexes. Result, slows the game down when executing plays when it matters most. Here Anthony is close to the record, which is 53 correctly executed exchanges in 20 seconds … from 5 1/2 feet from wall. Work fast! Pitchers you set the tone on defense! “Toe and Go!” Commit to your pitch, make the pitch, backup to top of mound, catch ball from C and go again. Get rid of the bad habit of walking off mound after every pitch towards catcher, receiving ball from C and walking a mile back to the top of the mound to make next pitch. It’s like watching paint dry and your defense falls asleep behind you. And on top of that… the grass hates you! Always remember, championship teams play with energy. Find ways, as a ball club, to add fuel, not lose it.

This one is coming from my heart. Don’t let this happen to your kid. The end of the summer of Taber’s 8th grade year we went to the beach as a family for two weeks and we have never regretted it. Good players have a BIG PROBLEM … That often keeps them from becoming great!!! …. They don’t like to look bad when they are training/practicing…. The result? They don’t challenge themselves. They stay in a comfort zone. Growth comes from challenge and eventual mastery. Start stacking bricks. Conquer a skill and then build on it.. Start simple and predictable and move towards complex and unpredictable. This is where authentic confidence is found! Yes, simple and predictable (easy) can be a part of your routine, especially as a warm up. But there needs to be an element of hard, or very hard in your offensive and defensive process. Why? THE COMPLETE INFIELDER …. A DIRT BRO… HAS IT ALL… Elite feet, elite hands, elite eyes (seeing the ball at high speeds), elite judgement (reading hops/angles), efficient transition from field to throw, ability to repeat mechanics, short arm stroke, ability to throw from all arm angles … on the run. Various footwork patterns… Elite Range and timing…. Soft hands… The ability to make plays one handed or two handed. Have a strong arm (when needed) and a very accurate arm… ALWAYS. On top of all this, you must have an elite internal clock. Above average baseball IQ and situational awareness. And It’s critical that all the above be taught and trained regularly.
