Pete Rose would tell Pete Rose Jr to, “Stay down, stay under the ceiling,” so he did not raise his head up too soon in his swing. It’s like Donnie Baseball saying, “As soon as you pick your head up your swing stops.”

Apparently Coach Gary Ward’s Oklahoma State University teams used to mash. I had NEVER heard of this technique to help initiate the backside. Another tool for the box.

More from Philadelphia Phillies Hitting Coach, Kevin Long and Alex Rodriguez. Long DOES like his hitters to work down on the low ball, which I was curious about after watching Philly hitters. He speaks of being tight to the body, allowing a flat swing.
