F-14 Tailhook Break Ejection 8 MAR 2002 A US Navy F-14A crashed into the northern Arabian Sea after its tailhook snapped off during an attempted landing on the carrier USS John C. Stennis. Metallurgical analysis of the tailhook found that an aluminum stripping process used during rework on the tailhook caused damage, and ultimately, failure of the hook.

Naval Aviators describe carrier landings ("traps") like landing on a postage stamp. Instead of flaring to land gently like commercial pilots, they fly the jet at a constant optimum angle of attack and intentionally slam it into the deck at high speed to ensure the tailhook catches an arresting wire.
