Metallurgical analysis of the tailhook found that an aluminum stripping process used during rework on the tailhook caused damage, and ultimately, failure of the hook.show more

🇺🇸 Two U.S. military aircraft crashed in the South... China Sea, the U.S. Pacific Fleet confirmed. An MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter and an F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet, both operating from the USS Nimitz went down separately, only 30 minutes apart, during routine operations. All five crew members were rescued and are reported to be in stable condition. The Navy has launched an investigation into what caused both aircraft to crash so close together. A Chinese J-15 Carrier-Based Multirole Fighter with the People's... Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), believed to have launched from a nearby aircraft carrier during a training exercise, crashed earlier today within Lingao County on Hainan Island in the South China Sea. The pilot was able to successfully eject, before being rescued by local residents; with the crash not reported to have caused any significant damage or casualties on the ground. Videos and pictures of the incident have quickly been removed from most Chinese social media.show more

June 30 1970: a US Navy F-4 crashes off... California (US), 1 of 2 aboard dies. On catapult launch from aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea, the nose gear failed. Both crew members ejected before the jet hit the sea. RIO Robert Keating was killed when he struck a plane parked on the flight deck. Crew were from VF-151 "Vigilantes" squadron Commanding Officer CDR Fred Winton (Pilot) and RIO - Radar Intercept Officer - LCDR Robert Keating. Jet [Registration "153913"] was to take part in a flyoff celebrating USS Coral Sea's return to San Francisco in the Summer of 1970. "Kate" Bomber Shot Down by U.S. Carrier Anti-Aircraft Fire... 🇺🇸🇯🇵 A Japanese Nakajima B5N2 "Kate" attempts a low-level strafing run on a U.S. Navy carrier during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands in 1942. Heavy anti-aircraft fire tears into the aircraft, ripping away its left wing in a burst of flames. The Kate rolls violently and crashes into the sea right beside the ship, sending up a huge splash and fireball.show more

‼️US F-35 'stealth fighter' hit by Iran. The AD... rocket ruptured in proximity, hitting the rear of the jet. This confirms an earlier US military report on the landing of a damaged F-35. But this isn't about destroyed or not, the F-35 for years was touted as invincible, a PR campaign on stealth directed to mock Russian and Chinese tech, well that era is over. The Iranians managed to video, track and strike the jet. Although not specified the system used, I'm confident the S-400 would have no trouble hitting that.show more

In 1963, the U.S. Navy wanted to find out... if a standard Marine Corps KC-130F Hercules, a massive 40-ton cargo plane, could land on a moving aircraft carrier to deliver heavy supplies over long distances. The ship was the USS Forrestal. And the pilot was Lieutenant James H. Flatley III, who had actually never flown a four-engine aircraft before getting this assignment. The Hercules had absolutely no tailhook, meaning it couldn't use the ship's arresting wires to stop. To land, the carrier had to steam at max speed directly into the wind, generating a massive 40-to-50-knot headwind down the deck. And the moment the tires touched down, Flatley had to slam all four engines into full reverse thrust bringing the giant plane to a complete halt in just 267 feet. Its massive 132-foot wingspan cleared the ship's control tower island by less than 15 feet. But taking off was an even crazier physics problem as the C-130 was way too big to hook up to the ship's steam catapults and therefore had to launch entirely under its own power. The crew thus had to back the aircraft up to the absolute rear edge of the flight deck. Flatley locked the brakes down completely and revved all four turboprop engines to 100% maximum power. When he released the brakes, 20,000 horsepower launched the plane forward. While Flatley focused on nose-wheel steering to keep the plane straight, his co-pilot held the control wheel to keep the massive wings level. Combined with the heavy headwind, the C-130 generated so much lift that it soared off the deck in only 745 feet. Over three days, they completed 29 touch-and-goes, 21 full-stop landings, and 21 unassisted takeoffs. Even though it worked, the Navy ultimately scrapped the idea as the C-130 was so huge it couldn't fit down the carrier's elevators, and the crew had to clear the entire deck just to land it; completely paralyzing the ship’s combat mission.show more

«Si vis pacem, para bellum» 🇺🇸 🇮🇷 The ceasefire... agreed on 8 April between the US and Iran came to an end at midnight on 21 April. During this time, Washington has deployed or is in the process of deploying around 10,000 personnel: - Approximately 6,000 personnel aboard the aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush and its strike group (including destroyers and other vessels), expected to arrive by the end of April. - Approximately a further 4,200 personnel in the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group and the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (including some 2,500 marines), also expected by the end of the month. These movements are described as a means of maintaining pressure on Iran to force an agreement more favourable to US interests, whilst preparing for possible resumption of hostilities should future negotiations fail.show more

A Japanese Air Self-Defense Force F-15J fighter jet made... an emergency landing at Naha Airport in Okinawa after its left main landing gear failed while returning from a scramble intercept mission. The aircraft, F-15J 22-8809 of the 304th Tactical Fighter Squadron (304 Hikotai), skidded on the runway, rotated approximately 180 degrees, and came to rest with its left wing touching the runway. Fortunately, the pilot was not harmed and exited the aircraft safely.show more
