Terra (FFVI) has one of my favorite notes in music. At 1:33, during her triumphant section, a guitar plays a single high tremolo note behind strings and timpani. Musically, it brings the piece full circle. Emotionally, it promises adventures yet to come. The horizon awaits.

FFVII's Main Theme has a beloved note. At 2:17, in the piano interlude, a background clarinet inverts the iconic seventh by playing it an octave lower. This doesn't just allude to the theme's conclusion, it turns a yearning into a warm embrace. That warmth will save the world.

Besaid (FFX) is my favorite game track ever. It's subtly complex. It lulls you into a daze with constants, but varies them in subtle ways (strings, drums, synth) to breathe new life. It is a song that can never be truly remade. Like the ocean, it just undulates. Forever.

Bombing Mission makes FFVII's opening one of the greatest playable intros in gaming history. -Pure Hollywood blockbuster heist vibe -Frantic piano and brass volley escalating stakes -Muted synth sections evoke modernity, espionage You're not in the SNES anymore, Toto:

As a kid, World 8 in Mario 3 felt so imposing due to the sheer number of levels you must beat before reaching 8-1. World 8 has only two numbered levels, but this psychological trick was nasty (and effective).

Green Memories is another Chrono overworld theme whose beauty lies in its simplicity. The song uses just three instruments: a piano alternating between melancholy and hopeful arpeggios, a lone wind for the main theme, followed by strings for depth. A promise longing for home.

Sometimes there’s beauty in simplicity. Chrono Cross’s Sailing in Another World uses just three instruments to create an evocative world map track. A wistful piano plays over a cascading guitar as a bass adds depth and grounding. Whilst laughter echoes under cerulean skies.

Strange World (DQ8) is my favorite DQ map theme. Like most journeys, it begins unassuming and humble. Brass and winds evoke curious exploration before strings romantically crescendo in a triumphant climax. Adventure lurks around every corner.

The Shadow Temple is not like Ocarina of Time’s other temples. It is not a palace or a place of worship. It is a torture chamber. It is a magnet for the evil of Hyrule’s bloody history, kept out of reach where few can find it. As hero, Link must endure night to witness dawn.

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest has some of my favorite symphonic rock in gaming. Dark King is a personal standout. -Foreboding intro -Drops hammer w/ kickin rhythm guitar, melodic strings -Snares, toms, bass fill gaps as layered strings ramp tension -Pure 80s prog rock energy

J-E-N-O-V-A (FFVII) is my favorite alien boss theme. -Opening minor synth arpeggio immediately sets eldritch mood -Heavy synth melody amps up otherworldliness -Oscillating strings and timpani raise stakes, threat level -Sick bass riff anchors everything Love this song.

Stone Tower Temple (MM) might be my favorite Zelda dungeon. A Tower of Babel, it mocks the Goddesses and Triforce. As punishment, light arrows flip its ascent to Heaven into a descent to Hell. The architecture and music also invert, tipping upside-down in stone and percussion.

Zozo is such a unique location in Final Fantasy VI. -Dungeon masquerading as a town -Unique traversal (leaping between buildings) -Every NPC lies to you -The lies create a puzzle for a powerful item -Huge gameplay shift (magic) -Banger track for dreary setting Love this place.
