This Chinese father dug a grave for his 2-year-old daughter while she was still alive. In 2017, Zhang Liyong prepared the grave after his daughter was diagnosed with severe thalassemia, even bringing her there to play so she could become “familiar” with what he believed would be her final resting place. The story quickly went viral, sparking a wave of crowdfunding that helped cover her treatment, and in a remarkable turn, she recovered with the help of her younger sister’s cord blood. After her recovery, Zhang filled the grave back in and planted sunflowers over it, turning what once symbolized despair into a sign of hope.
