#BREAKING: President Trump today said regime change in #Iran "would be the best thing that could happen. For 47 years, they've been talking and talking and talking. In the meantime, we've lost a lot of lives while they talk. Legs blown off, arms blown off, faces blown off. We've been going on for a long time so let's see what happens." President Trump understands the dynamics here more than most people realize. He has no patience for the Islamic Republic's stalling. And this is a historic statement, following other historic statements, for an American president to make. It's gone further than his predecessors, who just used to express support for the Iranian people to exercise their rights.

Very powerful scenes of Masih Alinejad 🏳️ and Ahmad Batebi 🛡️ 🇮🇷 🇺🇸 confronting #Iran's regime's mission at the UNSC today (it notably didn't send the permanent rep but one of his deputies). This was a good idea for U.S. Mission to the UN to invite them to hold Tehran accountable before the UNSC. At one point one of the members of the Iran regime delegation started laughing at them and Ahmad called him out.

Video of a memorial ceremony taking place today in #Iran for members of Khamenei's family who were killed in the strike on his compound. None of Khamenei's sons appear to be present. The only family members present include Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, Mojtaba's father-in-law, and Ali Khamenei's brother-in-law.

A few observations from Khamenei's speech--his first after the historic protests in #Iran last night. (1) This was a classic Khamenei speech. He didn't give an inch. Doubled down. Deflected. He's been marinating for four decades in his ideology and conspiratorial thinking. And he had a front row seat for the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Khamenei believed because the Shah made concessions that contributed to his downfall. Therefore, that is a lesson Khamenei has applied to all rounds of protests, so he will likely hold firm. This is why the Iranian people have concluded the Islamic Republic must go. It can't be reformed. (2) Khamenei delivered the speech from the Imam Khomeini Husseiniyeh in a public setting--which is attached to his office likely to show he is not hiding underground and hasn't fled. It's also why I'm skeptical of reports Khamenei has plans to flee. He will die in Iran, in my assessment, as it's not like he has extensive ties abroad. He's different in that way. Perhaps others around him would flee, but not him.

A sanctioned Meraj Air flight has just landed in New York carrying a sanctioned president of the Islamic Republic Ebrahim Raisi who is complicit in crimes against humanity in #Iran and whose regime is trying to assassinate Americans. Raisi will be protected by the U.S. Secret Service, funded by American taxpayers.

It's been around 24 hours since #Iran's regime announced the wounded Mojtaba Khamenei as the new supreme leader. But he has not made any public appearance to date. No proof of life from a figure that has not had an extensive public profile. Not even a video message. Instead there have been AI videos like the below, old photos, propaganda posters, rallies, and congratulatory messages from the IR's political elite. This raises questions about his whereabouts and the extent of his injuries.

The regime in #Iran can hire criminal gangs who recruit children to plot terror in #Norway--the risk was so high the Norwegian security services had to raise the threat level last fall--but still receive red carpet treatment in Oslo today. And European countries wonder why Tehran continues its malign behavior. It thinks it can get away with it and there are no consequences. Here's Exhibit A:

Dramatic events today. Let's review what just happened: With #Iran's regime targeting Saudi Aramco today, reprising its attacks in 2019 of Saudi oil infrastructure, it is reverting to factory settings pre-normalization with #SaudiArabia. The Islamic Republic is proving the terrorist regime it always was, hiding behind diplomatic niceties. #Qatar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is saying today #Iran's regime has to pay a price for targeting Qatari civilian infrastructure. This is coming from *Qatar* which has long had close ties to Tehran and served as a diplomatic pressure valve for the regime. Tehran similarly attacked Oman in recent days. Just today an oil tanker was attacked in the Gulf of Oman by a bomb-carrying drone boat, sparking a fire and killing 1. UAE has also been the victim of Tehran's attacks. A drone strike hit a British air base in Cyprus overnight, causing limited damage and no casualties, Cypriot and British officials said on Monday. Has the regime in Tehran heard of NATO? The UK is a NATO member-state. Several U.S. warplanes crashed this morning in #Kuwait. But all crew members thankfully survived. Iran's regime is trying to widen the conflict to put pressure on the U.S. to curtail the Operation Epic Fury and distract from attacking Iranian soil. But given these attacks, Iran's regime is effectively triggering a coalition of countries to join the U.S. and #Israel or at least support them. Tehran was already deeply isolated before this--China, Russia haven't defended it militarily--but now it's diplomatic problems are growing even worse. It is digging its own grave. Tehran views this as a fight for survival, but in doing so it is ensuring its demise.

Notable: U.S. Deputy Special Envoy Morgan Ortagus, Steve Witkoff's deputy, tells العربية: "we're not going to get in the Biden trap: indirect talks lasting for years and the Iranians stringing us along. Not happening. Talks need to be quick" and be focused on "dismantling Iran's nuclear weapons program." She makes clear they are rejecting the Obama/Biden approach to #Iran.

President Trump today: "We have a lot of ships on their way to #Iran. We have a big flotilla going in that direction...We'll see what happens. We have a big force on its way over there. I don't want anything to happen, but we'll have to see what happens." A classic Trumpian move and message. He also says sure we'll talk to them but we've talked with them a lot and they should have made a deal. In response to a question about whether the supreme leader will leave power, he said he doesn't want to get into that right now but they know what we're looking for and there's a lot of killing going on.

Horrifying footage from Kahrizak Medical Examiner's Office in Tehran, #Iran. This was on Thursday, January 8. The Islamic Republic is engaged in a massacre of the Iranian people. The Iranian people need support from the U.S. and its allies and partners beyond tweets and statements. And Khamenei and his henchmen need to pay dearly for this.
