This is what Abhijeet Dipke unleashed in the name of ‘students’ protest. The young man on whom a lynch mob was let loose had dared protest the vile abuse directed at PM Modi. The cue came from Dipke who spoke disparagingly of the PM.

As a Hindu Bengali of East Bengal origin and a refugee legatee, I cannot but compliment Jairam Ramesh and thank him enough for his eloquent defence of Hindus in Bangladesh who are being targeted by Islamists. This is called ‘Politics of Courage’.

More than 10 lakh Bengalis jam Brigade to see, hear and cheer PM Modi. I have seen scores of rallies at Brigade Parade Ground since the 1977 historic Left rally. But nothing comes close to what I saw at PM Modi’s rally today. It was not a sea of people but an ocean of Bengalis who kept pouring in, tidal wave after tidal wave, till there was not an inch of space left. Brigade has a 10-lakh capacity. The ground was choked long before the PM arrived. All roads leading to Brigade were jammed by buses, tailing back several miles, from which people were unable to alight. As Modi Ji spoke, the loudest support came from Adivasis and farmers (chaashi) who were out in full strength. Also women and youth — the women stood on chairs, the youth couldn’t get enough of Modi Ji. It was a very hot scorching day and there was no covering tent. It was all open. Nobody complained. Best part — I sat with the unwashed masses to get a sense of their sentiments. They were organic and raw. This could be the inflexion point all of West Bengal and Bengalis have been waiting for. The bend in politics that could yet rewrite the destiny of Obhaga Bangla — unlucky Bengal, a State deprived, dishonoured and disinherited by its corrupt, criminal and communal rulers.

Hello Dr. Ajoy Kumar not good of you to erase Mrs Indira Gandhi’s annexation of Sikkim which became the 22nd State of India on 16 May 1975. The process began in September 1974 with Parliament adopting 36th Amendment. Jana Sangh supported annexation of Sikkim. Lefties opposed it.

A minion was trying to impress his Netri by quoting from Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Bharat Bhagya Bidhata’ or ‘The Morning Song of India’ from which Bharat’s National Anthem is excerpted. Netri curtly told minion to cut the cr*p and move on. This is the reality of “Tagore’s Bengal”.

The fatwa against Rishi Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s ‘Vande Mataram’ is not without history and can be traced to Congress’s capitulation in the face of Islamist opposition. In 1923, the Congress met at Kakinada and Maulana Mohamed Ali was brought to the venue in a procession led by a raucous band. As was the practice, the session was scheduled to begin with a rendition of ‘Vande Mataram’ by Pandit Vishnu Digamabar Paluskar. When Pandit Paluskar rose to sing what had by then become the anthem of India's freedom movement, Maulana Mohamed Ali protested, saying that music was taboo to Islam and therefore singing ‘Vande Mataram’ would hurt his religious sensitiveness. Pandit Paulskar snubbed the maulana, pointing out that the Congress session was an open gathering and not a religion congregation of any one faith. For good measure, he added that since the Maulana had not found the band that led his procession as taboo to Islam, he could not object to the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’. Maulana Mohammed Ali may have been stumped on that occasion, but by the time India became independent from foreign rule, the Congress had conceded ground to those who today exercise their veto against the singing of India’s National Song, ‘Vande Mataram’. By 1937, Vande Mataram had become a 'Muslim grievance' and Ali Sardar Jafri convinced fellow-traveller Jawaharlal Nehru that the song which had inspired the freedom movement and sent martyrs like Khudiram Bose to the gallows without any trace of regret, was actually 'idolatorous in spirit'. In fact, Nehru went a step further and described the mantra of Indian nationalism and patriotism as 'out of keeping with modern notions of nationalism and progress.' The Muslim League was quick to take its cue from Nehru and a month later, on October 17, 1937, passed a resolution at its Lucknow session, condemning the Congress for foisting ‘Vande Mataram’ as the national anthem upon the country in ‘callous disregard of the feelings of Muslims.' When the Congress Working Committee met in Calcutta later that year with Nehru as Congress president, it officially recognised 'the validity of the objections raised by the Muslims to certain parts of the Vande Mataram song' and 'recommended that at national gatherings the first two stanzas only of the song should be sung.' The cultural and civilisational content of ‘Vande Mataram’ was sacrificed by the Congress on the altar of Muslim League politics. But appeasement does not have any limits -- the Muslim League was not reassured either by Nehru's action or his promise that ‘Vande Mataram’ in 'future (will) become less important.' The Pirpur Committee, which was set up by the Muslim League to compile a list of 'atrocities against Muslims', submitted its report on November 15, 1938. Among the 'atrocities against Muslims' was listed ‘Vande Mataram’. Given this history, there is no reason to be surprised by Sonia Gandhi exercising the veto against the singing of Bharat’s National Song — the full version of ‘Vande Mataram’ — on behalf of the descendants and adherents of the Pirpuris. #VandeMataram
