This is who Russia chooses to target. Not a military position. A civilian at work. In Ukraine’s Kherson, a Russian drone deliberately hunted down an ordinary market vendor. The attack left the 52-year-old man with injuries and a concussion. This is a deliberate campaign of terror against innocent civilians. The world must not accept this as normal. Stronger pressure on Russia is needed right now. These crimes must not go unanswered.

In March 2022, Russia dropped an aerial bomb on the Mariupol Drama Theater, where hundreds of people were sheltering – children among them. It deliberately turned this place into a mass grave, committing a blatant war crime. The word “CHILDREN” was written in front of the theater to make it unmistakably clear that civilians – including the youngest residents of Mariupol – were hiding inside from Russia's attack. For Russia, this became not a reason to stop, but another reason to strike. December 2025 – three years later – Russia is hosting festive events to mark the so-called “reopening” of the theater, at the very site where Mariupol’s civilians were killed, accompanied by dances, concerts, and celebrations. This is deliberate terror and a deliberate attempt to evade responsibility. Russia must be held accountable for taking the lives of innocent people and for committing genocide against the Ukrainian people.

Today is the 1,500th day since Russia launched its full-scale war against Ukraine. What Moscow expected to be a quick victory has turned into a long and costly failure. Instead of achieving its goals, Russia has only deepened its losses and isolation. The world has seen what Russia truly is: a terrorist state. The only answer to this is unity, sustained pressure, and continued defence support for Ukraine.

The world knows this unforgettable melody and sings it in numerous languages. “Shchedryk” (Carol of the Bells), inspired by a Ukrainian folk carol, became a global symbol of Christmas. It was composed by Ukrainian Mykola Leontovych, born on this day in 1877. Leontovych was a teacher, composer, and choir conductor who dedicated his life to recording and revitalising Ukrainian folk songs. His music carries a special kind of magic: no matter the language, the melody resonates with joy, hope, and the spirit of celebration. Leontovych was tragically killed in 1921 by Soviet secret police for defending Ukrainian culture. But his legacy lives on, and "Shchedryk" continues to unite people around the world.

11-year-old Roman Oleksiv, who survived the Russian missile attack on Vinnytsia, spoke at the European Parliament during a documentary screening about Ukrainian children. He shared the story of losing his mother in the attack. The boy survived severe burns through 36 surgeries and long rehabilitation. His story moved the translator to tears as she interpreted his words for the audience. Despite everything, Roman continues to study, dance, and make music, inspiring others with his message: “Never give up. Together, we are strong.”

Twice within hours, Russia struck civilian buses in Zaporizhzhia. Three people were killed, while over 10 passengers, including children, were injured. These were ordinary people travelling through the city when Russia deliberately targeted civilian transport. Today, Russia also launched a missile strike on Dnipro, attacked Kharkiv with guided aerial bombs, struck emergency responders in Nikopol, and hit the Sumy, Odesa, Chernihiv, and Kherson regions. In Kharkiv, one person was killed and at least 12 were injured after Russian guided bombs hit a civilian enterprise, damaging a tram and railway tracks. These attacks are part of Russia’s systematic campaign of terror against Ukrainian civilians. Every additional air defence system and every interceptor missile delivered to Ukraine means more lives protected. Strengthening Ukraine’s air defence is one of the fastest and most effective ways to save civilians from Russia’s terror.

While it is graduation season in Ukraine, Russia continues its brutal campaign against civilians, killing young people and destroying futures. In Kharkiv, a 23-year-old medical student and future doctor, Fatima Huseinova, was killed when the city was hit by two Russian guided aerial bombs on June 29. She was in the final stage of her medical education. At least 12 civilians were injured in that attack. Every life taken is an irreversible loss. Russia must be held accountable for every such death. The aggressor must be stopped as soon as possible so that these atrocities come to an end.

Extreme lack of water and microscopic food portions — these were just some of the many forms of torture at Olenivka prison in the temporarily occupied Donetsk region, where Russia holds captured Ukrainian defenders and civilians. Yevhen Malik, a defender of Mariupol who was held in Russian captivity for 2.5 years, is a witness to these crimes. In July 2022, Russia carried out the mass murder in Olenivka, killing over 50 defenders and wounding more than 130 – a deliberate and premeditated crime. Russia has blocked independent investigators from the site ever since. Political, diplomatic, and sanctions pressure must increase to ensure Russia is held accountable.

Children swing on a playground beside a building struck by a Russian attack today. Despite everything, life goes on. But Ukrainian children deserve to grow up without air raid sirens and missile strikes. They deserve safe playgrounds, peaceful sleep, and a happy childhood. Just four days ago, on July 2, Russia killed 31 people and injured 102 in its attack on Kyiv. Today, Russia struck Kyiv again. At least 11 people have been killed, around 60 injured, and residential buildings across the city have been damaged. Rescue operations are still underway. Ukraine intercepted many drones and cruise missiles overnight. But Russia's ballistic missiles reached their targets because there are not enough interceptor missiles. Every delay in delivering more air defence, including Patriot missiles, costs lives. The US and Europe have the means to help stop this terror.
