Those nights weren’t special then. CRT glow. Mix CDs. Classroom TV carts. SNES on the carpet. VHS tapes. Now you’d give anything for one more. 80s–00s vault.

Shorts

Walking into Toys “R” Us and heading straight for the video game aisle was one of the best feelings as a kid. Game Boy Color, PlayStation, Nintendo… you could spend forever just staring at the shelves deciding what you’d get if you somehow had unlimited money. And here’s something I never thought we’d be saying again: Toys “R” Us is opening a lot more stores. The company just announced plans to open 120 new standalone U.S. locations for the 2026 holiday season, bringing its standalone U.S. total to 160. Maybe a whole new generation is about to find out what it was like to be a Toys “R” Us kid. There really was nothing quite like this place.

This is Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds, which came out in 2002, with a Clone Campaigns expansion in 2003. Ensemble made this, and it's basically just Age of Empires 2 with a Star Wars skin. I wish they still made great RTS games like they did in the 90s and 00s.
