Mysuru City Corporation(MCC) officials continued their footpath encroachment clearance operation following Supreme Court’s order. The City Corporation Zone-1 officials carried out a Special Footpath Encroachment Clearance operation this morning at Chamaraja Double Road in city. The operation was carried out from Maharaja Sanskrit College Circle to Ramaswamy Circle.

An incident of an unknown person dumping waste into River Cauvery has been reported from Kondangeri village at Murnad town in Kodagu district. The video, captured by local residents, shows the person throwing waste into the river from the bridge. The matter has been brought to the notice of the local Police who are on the hunt to trace the offender.

A team of forest officials raided a farmhouse in Mangala village, located on the fringes of Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Chamarajanagar and recovered a deer head, antlers, pelt and a licensed gun. Acting on a tip-off from a farmer leader in Mangala village, a team of forest officials from the Gopalaswamy Betta Range of the Bandipur Tiger Reserve arrived at the farm house and conducted a thorough inspection, during which the deer head, pelt,antlers and guns were found. The forest officials immediately seized the items including guns and knifes. They are also investigating whether the gun was used for illegal activities or hunting. According to the forest officials, the farmhouse belonged to one lady Senetila Langkumerand the weapons to one of her relative Karnal Jacob, both of whom are currently absconding. Meanwhile, the forest sleuths arrested one Suresh Pariyar, who was present at the farmhouse during the raid.

In what can be termed as a continued retaliation for the forest encounter incident that occurred on Aug. 15, miscreants set the forest on fire, turning around 10 acres of forest into ashes. The incident took place at Shilubepura in Kollegal taluk of Chamarajanagar district yesterday night. According to sources, a group of miscreants set the fire at 5-6 locations using petrol or diesel to ensure the fire spreads faster. Fortunately, the forest sleuths who arrived at the spot on time were able to douse the fire, preventing it from causing further damage. Sources also added that the miscreants, in an attempt to divert the investigation of the recent encounter of three alleged poachers, were deliberately creating new situations. It may be recalled that following the encounter incident, miscreants had damaged around 11 Anti Poaching Camps in the area using gelatin sticks. In fact, the miscreants have been using forest brigand Veerappan’s methods such as placing boulders, wooden logs and digging potholes on roads to prevent the forest sleuths from reaching the incident spots. Meanwhile, the forest department has filed complaints at jurisdictional Police Stations seeking action against the miscreants.

An incident of Tamil Nadu-based bikers trespassing into the safari route at Bandipur National Park was reported yesterday. The biker, along with a pillion rider, was seen travelling on his motorcycle on the safari route located 3 kms from Bandipur old campus at about 4.50 pm. With tigers and other wild animals being sighted at the tiger reserve, the bikers have neglected the safety norms by straying into the forest. On witnessing the bikers entering the restricted forest area, a few of the Mysuru-based tourists warned them not to enter the forest. However, not yielding to the warning, they continued their jolly ride about 2 kms into the forest and returned on the same route. The video of which was captured by some tourists. Meanwhile, by the time the forest guards could arrive, the duo had fled the spot through the Kekkanahalla check post and Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu. The Forest officials, who have noted down the motorcycle registration number, have passed it on to the Mudumalai forest officials and Tamil Nadu Police. Bandipur Tiger Reserve Director L. Nandish has also instructed the officials to identify the miscreants and initiate necessary action.

An incident of a wild elephant attacking a tourist car has been reported on Ooty Road, passing through Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu yesterday. The incident occurred when the herd of elephants was crossing the road; suddenly, a wild female elephant, which was moving with its calf, attacked the car. Fortunately, the tourists escaped unhurt as the driver was successful in reversing the car. On seeing the herd of elephants crossing the road, the tourist vehicles stopped to facilitate the crossing of the elephants. Despite this, the elephant attacked the car, damaging the front bonnet.

The Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) Dam has entered the crucial Southwest Monsoon season of 2026 with one of its poorest water positions in recent years, raising concerns over the sluggish progress of rainfall in the Cauvery catchment areas of Kodagu. According to official data from Cauvery Neeravari Nigama Limited (CNNL) on June 28, 2026, the reservoir held 11.233 tmcft (thousand million cubic feet) of water at a level of 81 feet against its full reservoir level of 124.80 feet. The inflow stood at just 530 cusecs. Of the total storage, the live storage is only 2.809 tmcft, while 8.424 tmcft accounts for dead storage and silt. A comparison with data recorded on the same date over the past two decades shows that the present storage is among the lowest for the end of June and is dramatically lower than last year, when the reservoir had almost reached its full capacity. On June 28, 2025, the reservoir stood at 123.25 feet with 47.311 tmcft of water and was receiving a massive inflow of 73,811 cusecs following heavy monsoon rains in Kodagu. Notably, the cumulative inflow in the last 20 years is the lowest in 2026 (from June 1 to June 28) with 1.37 tmcft. At the same time, the cumulative inflow in the last 20 years was the highest in 2025, with 38.4 tmcft. The inflow trend also presents a worrying picture. At 530 cusecs, the present inflow is the lowest recorded among the 20 years listed, even lower than 547 cusecs in 2009 and 655 cusecs in 2019. By comparison, the reservoir received 13,437 cusecs in 2024, 36,510 cusecs in 2015, 23,867 cusecs in 2013, 11,483 cusecs in 2011 and a staggering 73,811 cusecs last year. Apart from weak monsoon rainfall and poor inflows, another major concern for the KRS Dam is the steady increase in silt accumulation, which has significantly reduced the reservoir's effective storage capacity. The estimated silt deposit and dead storage level at the reservoir remained unchanged at 4.401 tmcft between 2016 and 2023. However, it rose sharply to 8.179 tmcft (silt and dead storage level) in 2024, increased further to 8.379 tmcft in 2025 and has now reached 8.424 tmcft (silt and dead storage level) in 2026.

The famous Chamundi Hill, which is among the most visited shrines in the country, is slowly turning into a dump yard with a large pile of garbage found all over the hill. The tourists, who visit the Chamundi Hill, litter waste and leftover food on roads leading to the hill top spoiling the sanctity of the sacred abode. The authorities have been turning a blind eye despite several complaints. Though there is a ban on single-use plastic, people continue to use it and later discard it on the roadside.
