Chloe Swarbrick and the Greens have declared that anyone earning over $160,000 a year is rich. It doesn’t matter if you’re a single parent with a big mortgage and children to support, or a single-income family doing their best to get by—you’re rich according to the Greens, and you will be worse off under their policies. Incredibly, Swarbrick then claims these same people—who stand to lose the most—are more than happy to pay even higher taxes.

Unbelievable. If the Speaker signed off on Chloe Swarbrick using the debating chamber to film a political attack ad for the Green Party, it would represent a serious lapse in judgment, allowing all manner of partisan campaign ads to be filmed inside the House. If Brownlee did not approve it, then Swarbrick, as a long-serving MP and party co-leader - would have been fully aware of the Standing Orders and filming protocols. She would have known that the Speaker’s explicit permission is required for such a shoot. That would make it a deliberate breach of the rules.

Train wreck interview for Qiulae Wong and the Opportunities Party as they declare war on pensioners — punishing lifetime savers and those who are “asset-rich, cash-poor”. Wong effectively tells them: Downsize the family home you’ve scrimped and sacrificed for your whole life (essentially forced displacement), or defer the tax and rob your children’s inheritance by hundreds of thousands of dollars. Wong then doubles down, arguing that those whose properties have risen by a million dollars or more should be taxed on those gains — seemingly blind to the fact these are mostly unrealised paper gains that have already driven up their rates. In reality, this policy could pressure thousands, if not tens of thousands of pensioners into selling their family home. Every dollar paid in Land Value Tax (or deferred) is money taken from healthcare, daily living costs, or gifts to the grandkids. The Opportunities Party is sacrificing pensioners for their housing redistribution experiment.

This is utterly inexcusable. Yesterday, HDPA revealed that Chloe Swarbrick wrote directly to the European Union’s Trade Commissioner, complaining that New Zealand is not cutting emissions sufficiently and asking him to launch a formal investigation into whether we have breached the Free Trade Agreement. Her actions risked exposing our economy and exporters to the very real threat of sanctions — or even worse. That Swarbrick and the Greens attended the National Agricultural Fieldays in Hamilton without disclosing any of this to farmers or the media, even though she held a stand-up directly mentioning Free Trade Agreements and export markets and called on the govt to be honest and transparent — is nothing short of disgraceful and deeply hypocritical. It simply beggars belief that the media aren’t all over this.

And just like that, the Opportunity Party’s carefully cultivated image as neutral centrists goes up in flames. Quilae Wong has stated that going into a coalition with the current govt is her 'last choice' and the gender definition bill is a red line they just wouldn’t cross.

Marama Davidson’s casual shrug when asked if taxpayers would get their money back on these 30-year interest-free solar loans was nothing short of frightening. It’s the same story with so much of what the Greens put out. Their Kiwipower policy feels like it was cooked up for catchy headlines and sound bites rather than anything workable or even remotely realistic. This thing has “financial disaster” written all over it.

Judge for yourself. Two interviews from Stuff/Three news presenter Samantha Hayes — one with ACT candidate Paul Henry, the other with Opportunities Party Leader Qiulae Wong. One faced aggressive personal questions and snide asides delivered under the breath (“trying to buy people’s favour perhaps”). The other was served up soft, leading questions that neatly aligned with party talking points. Don’t get me wrong, tough questions and robust policy scrutiny are essential. But they must be applied consistently. When viewed side by side, these two interviews cannot honestly be described as balanced or even-handed.

A good, bold move by Luxon, who has already ruled out working with the Opportunity Party. This creates clear air, completely undercuts TOP’s “kingmaker” ability, and gives him time to shape the narrative. It also limits their capacity to attract centre-right votes and frames them unequivocally as left-wing.

Another train wreck interview that perfectly exposes how out of touch the Opportunity Party and its leader, Qiulae Wong, are with reality. Wong is now openly admitting that many retirees will be worse off under their proposed Land Value Tax. This punitive policy could force tens of thousands of retirees out of their family homes or bury them under hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt — effectively confiscating their children’s and grandchildren’s inheritance. After copping significant backlash on social media for suggesting retirees should simply downsize, Wong has now doubled down even further, implying they just “take the hit for their kids and grandkids.”

Serious questions need to be asked about the Green Party’s standards after selecting Michel Mulipola as their candidate for Māngere. His social media is full of vile abuse: calling police “cunts” and “pigs” while laughing at them, labelling a minister “a piece of shit,” and sharing grotesque cartoons that depict one minister with faeces streaming from his eyes and an anus for a mouth, while another is shown as a baboon with the minister’s face on its rear. He has incited outrage against a Samoan woman simply for volunteering with the IDF, celebrated Charlie Kirk’s assassination, issued threats, promoted his own “Death, death to the IDF” t-shirts, edited a video purporting to show Israel shooting a small child, and casually referred to Hamas as “armed resistance” and “a misnomer” — ignoring its designation as a terrorist organisation, its structured military wing, and its tactics and ideology. He has even labelled democracy itself a “red flag” and dismissed peace in Gaza and a two-state solution as a “cop-out.” The list goes on and on. It simply beggars belief that the Greens consider this kind of violent, toxic behaviour suitable for a potential Member of Parliament. How can a party that claims to stand for compassion, justice, and democracy possibly endorse someone who so brazenly glorifies violence, dehumanises opponents, and rejects the very democratic values he would swear to uphold? This is not political passion; it is poison.

Finally, we’re starting to see some genuine frustration showing through, with a clear theme now dominating every Hipkins presser: “How are you going to pay for all this?” With pay equity the elephant in the room, it’s becoming increasingly likely that Labour will leave it as late as possible before wheeling out independent costings to claim Treasury has got its numbers wrong. Given Labour’s dire economic record last time in government, convincing the public that his numbers are correct will be a very tall order for Hipkins.

Tova O’Brien is just two weeks into her role as co-host and the direction of TVNZ’s Breakfast show has become crystal clear: ramp up the attacks and criticism of Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and the government at every available opportunity. Fresh off Tova’s combative “gotcha” interview with the PM, the show capped off the week with its “People’s Panel.” The guests were former TVNZ presenter Brodie Kane, widely regarded as left-leaning and Labour Party member and Auckland City Councillor Richard Hills. This panel stacking occurred just weeks after TVNZ political editor Maiki Sherman issued an internal apology to the Minister of Police over the broadcaster’s unbalanced reporting on crime and gang numbers. It is deeply concerning that TVNZ either cannot recognise such blatant bias and compromised content, even from an optics point of view — or simply doesn’t care. It can be argued that a Labour led govt is significantly more friendly and less demanding of the broadcaster. Seven months out from the election, TVNZ appears to be signalling exactly who it would prefer to win.

Thinking through ACT’s latest announcement. Securing Paul Henry as a candidate really is a massive win. It delivers huge gains in message amplification and visibility, turbochargers their last-minute fundraising which was already shooting the lights out, and perhaps most importantly - provides a powerful and credible rallying cry that will energise the base.

And there you go. Te Pāti Māori and the Greens are effectively doing a deal. Less than 10 hours after I called on the Greens and Te Pāti Māori to stop playing games and be upfront with their supporters and the public, Debbie Ngarewa-Packer has essentially confirmed the deal. Ngarewa-Packer says Te Pāti Māori will “swallow their ego for the good of the nation.” She’s made it crystal clear that her party is focused on securing the candidate votes in their electorates and in doing so, has all but confirmed an arrangement with the Greens. According to the RNZ-Reid Research poll, 49.6% of all voters believe Labour should rule out any deal with Te Pāti Māori. Even worse for Labour: 38% of their own voters want Labour to reject Te Pāti Māori outright. A Greens-Te Pāti Māori deal increases the chances of a chaotic Labour-led coalition and makes Hipkins continual refusal to confirm if Labour will or won’t work with Te Pāti Māori almost inconsequential.

Here we go again. Appearing on Q+A, Labour’s Transport spokesperson Tangi Utikere told Jack Tame that their public transport fare cap policy will be funded by taking money from road maintenance — including the repair of potholes. Under the last Labour government, potholes became such a serious problem for road users that National campaigned heavily on the issue and since the coalition government took office, there has been clear and significant progress. Labour taking money from road maintenance will undo all that work.

If Hipkins and Labour return to govt, they look set to take another crack at hate speech laws. Appearing on TVNZ Breakfast this morning, Hipkins was asked about the need for such laws in light of Brian Tamaki’s comments. He replied: “I still think there are legitimate issues here, gaps in the law.” A pretty clear signal they’ll try again — despite their last push drawing around 19,000 submissions, the vast majority opposed on free speech grounds.
