What on earth is Chris Hipkins thinking? There are still six weeks until the election, and Hipkins’ decision to be accompanied on the campaign trail by Trevor Mallard has almost backfired immediately. Mallard can clearly be seen putting his hands on Vision NZ candidate Karl Mokaraka who asks Hipkins repeatedly “What is a woman?” As Hipkins is leaving, Mokaraka asks “Can we get an apology for the public? You left our South Auckland in a mess.”

Absolutely disgraceful behaviour from Te Pāti Māori’s Debbie Ngarewa-Packer and Labour’s Willie Jackson. Ngarewa-Packer used the word “cunt” in the House and was ejected after arguing with the Speaker. Willie Jackson then argued, resulting in the Serjeant-at-Arms being called to remove him.

Tamatha Paul used her speech on the Treaty of Waitangi (Standardisation) Amendment Bill, to repeatedly call Don Brash a crusty old fart, resulting in the Speaker terminating the rest of her speech. Then she filmed herself in her office, laughing and saying it again. Nothing on the bill - just doubling down on the personal insult. This is the standard of behaviour from the number four ranked candidate of Labour’s coalition partner.

Frightening to see Marama Davidson gleefully boasting “Revoke, hard out, hard out, and we’re proud of it Ryan, this is rubbish” when asked about the cancellation of mining approvals that have already been lawfully granted. Davidson then doubles down while showing a complete lack of understanding of the issue, when Bridge asks her about the sovereign risk to NZ if there is a perceived risk of govt intervention in signed contracts, property and businesses. “I am not pulling out a violin for property speculators.”

Interesting to compare David Seymour’s response to Marama Davidson’s when Ryan Bridge asks if they have ever used race as a weapon in politics. Davidson refuses to acknowledge earlier comments from Green MPs, including “pale, stale, male” and “white farmers,” as well as her own “white cis men” remarks.

Frightening. Qiulae Wing had no idea her own board can veto decisions made by the caucus. Jack Tame: “Is there any scenario in which you could be elected to Parliament and he and the rest of the board can overrule your decision as caucus?” Wong: “No.” Tame: “Paragraph 11.3 of your constitution says the board may overrule the caucus with a 75% vote if it considers caucus decisions prejudice the party charter.”

Just imagine the media firestorm if an ACT candidate posted an Instagram story of themselves mouthing “fuck you” and “you can all fuck off” with Chloe Swarbrick’s photo in the background, then captioned it “the song isn’t aimed at anyone, I just like it.” Media would treat it as a targeted attack and it would be leading the 6pm news and be front page of the NZ Herald within the hour. David Seymour would be put under immense pressure to issue a Party apology, and face an onslaught of questions regarding whether the candidate is fit to stand. But when a Green candidate does it on her Instagram story, it’s just a song she likes and nothing to see here. Let’s not forget, Waikato previously posted a social media video where she wrote: “I know it’s going to be hard not to punch David Seymour and Winston.” Media letting this slide, beggars belief.

Last night, TVNZ ran a story about ACT’s proposal to build a world-class National Cancer Centre. However, TVNZ decided to include the objections of Dr Christopher Jackson. Dr Jackson just happens to be the husband of current Labour MP Rachel Brooking, a significant and material fact that TVNZ deliberately chose not to reveal to viewers. His objections were included immediately after those of Labour’s Health Spokesperson Ayesha Verrall, and the segment finished with the last word from Dr Jackson - it’s hard to argue that TVNZ isn’t continuing to stack the deck ahead of the election.

Train wreck. Chris Hipkins will be absolutely furious with Willie Jackson for revealing that, just ten weeks out from the election, Labour still has not decided whether it will bring back the Māori Health Authority and has not even discussed the numbers. Even more striking is Jackson’s claim that they are talking to “Māori healthcare experts” such as Labour candidate Kingi Kiriona, the former Deputy CEO of the Māori Health Authority. Kiriona has no health qualifications whatsoever. But does hold an MA in an undisclosed subject, a Postgraduate Certificate in Te Reo Māori, a BA in Screen Media and Māori, and a BMPA (Bachelor of Māori Performing Arts) and is best known as a kapa haka exponent. Te Aka Whai Ora appointed him DCE – Mātauranga Māori. That role was defined as leading tikanga, te reo, and Māori knowledge systems. That appointment and the fact he is now considered a Māori Healthcare expert, makes Labour’s apparent priority clear: cultural capability first, clinical outcomes second.

Tell me you know nothing about farming without telling me you know nothing about farming. On Q+A’s rural issues debate, Opportunity’s Deputy Leader and Agriculture spokesman Daniel Eb said “herd sizes are declining.” Yet, Dairy NZ’s own statistics say average dairy herd size is still rising. Caught out, he pivots to sheep. Sheep aren’t a herd. They’re a flock. So to be clear, the guy who wants to tax farms and lecture farmers on land use, can’t even tell a herd from a flock, or herd size from herd numbers. Brilliant.

Council of Trade Unions President Sandra Grey says the CTU’s extensive and costly policies, which include: restoring pay equity, buying back the gentailers, free public early childhood education, longer paid parental leave, social income insurance, a Ministry of Green Works, and closing the civil infrastructure gap will all be funded by a capital gains tax and broader tax reform. Grey says that reform should include looking at where wealth taxes and Tobin taxes have worked internationally and is emphatic that there is no evidence that billionaires leave if some of their gains from property, investments and money are taxed. She cannot, however, name a specific example or a single country where a wealth tax has worked well.

Chloe Swarbrick and the Greens have declared that anyone earning over $160,000 a year is rich. It doesn’t matter if you’re a single parent with a big mortgage and children to support, or a single-income family doing their best to get by—you’re rich according to the Greens, and you will be worse off under their policies. Incredibly, Swarbrick then claims these same people—who stand to lose the most—are more than happy to pay even higher taxes.

Train wreck interview for Qiulae Wong and the Opportunities Party as they declare war on pensioners — punishing lifetime savers and those who are “asset-rich, cash-poor”. Wong effectively tells them: Downsize the family home you’ve scrimped and sacrificed for your whole life (essentially forced displacement), or defer the tax and rob your children’s inheritance by hundreds of thousands of dollars. Wong then doubles down, arguing that those whose properties have risen by a million dollars or more should be taxed on those gains — seemingly blind to the fact these are mostly unrealised paper gains that have already driven up their rates. In reality, this policy could pressure thousands, if not tens of thousands of pensioners into selling their family home. Every dollar paid in Land Value Tax (or deferred) is money taken from healthcare, daily living costs, or gifts to the grandkids. The Opportunities Party is sacrificing pensioners for their housing redistribution experiment.

Qiulae Wong now openly says the Opportunity Party is open to a CGT as an alternative to their Land Value Tax, and will negotiate with Labour on their CGT. Labour’s proposed CGT sits at 28% and specifically excludes the family home, rural land and farms, exactly the assets captured by Opportunity’s proposed Land Value Tax. This is significant as Wong has previously called Labour’s CGT “tinkering” and “minuscule”, so negotiations would clearly look to significantly increase its scope of capture and rate.

Yet another train wreck media appearance from Willie Jackson. Labour’s fourth-ranked MP has just said “no” when asked by Ryan Bridge on Herald NOW, if Labour’s CGT applies to commercial buildings owned by a business, and to KiwiSaver funds that invest in property. Both wrong. Chris Hipkins and Labour are selling a “simple” capital gains tax that even their fourth-ranked MP can’t explain and doesn’t know what it does and doesn’t apply to.

This is significant. Appearing on the ofInterestNZ podcast, Qiulae Wong seemingly had no idea of what Opportunity’s 12% tax-free KiwiSaver scheme would cost the Crown, which is extraordinary for a party that sells itself as evidence based. She appeared to stop just short of saying it had not been costed: “Ah… we don’t…I….I haven’t got the numbers on me right now.” Opportunity says its “Tax Reset is a fully-funded package of three reforms — a Citizen’s Income so everyone can afford the basics, a Land Value Tax to lower house prices and KiwiSaver 2.0, a compulsory superannuation system.” Their policy makes the entire 12% (employee plus employer) exempt from income tax, with fund earnings later becoming tax-free too, which is a massive ongoing tax concession. If that hasn’t been costed, Opportunity can’t call the package fully funded. If it has been costed, the party should release the numbers now.

Opportunity Party leader Qiulae Wong appeared on Herald Now this morning and agreed that 22-year-old thieves and robbers could go through family conferences instead of the adult court system, before quickly claiming “that’s not our policy.” Bridge asked what sort of crimes would be suitable for a 22-year-old to go through a family conference instead of adult court. Bridge: “Like robbing?” Wong’s response: “Theft, yeah.” TOP quickly abandoned its policy of raising the youth justice age to 25 the moment it ran into social media backlash and now the appears to have no firm position at all, telling voters they’ll have to wait until the end of September for more details. You simply cannot spend months presenting yourself as the serious, evidence-based alternative and then ditch a core justice policy the second it becomes awkward.
