Today, the Federal Government of Somalia deposited the instruments of accession to fifteen international maritime conventions with the International Maritime Organization (IMO), setting a new record as the largest single deposit of instruments of accession in the Organization’s history. This historic milestone reflects Somalia’s unwavering commitment to strengthening its maritime sector and aligning with the highest international standards of maritime safety, security, environmental protection, and governance. The conventions deposited include the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG), 1972, Convention on Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic (FAL), 1965, International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR), 1979, Protocol of 2005 to the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Maritime Navigation (SUA), 2005, International Convention on Tonnage Measurement of Ships (TONNAGE), 1969, International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978, Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks, 2007, International Oil Pollution Compensation Fund Protocol, 1992, Civil Liability Convention Protocol (CLC), 1992, MARPOL Protocol, 1997, International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation (OPRC), 1990, SOLAS Protocol, 1978, and SOLAS Protocol, 1988>, among others. This landmark achievement demonstrates Somalia’s determination to modernize its maritime legal framework, enhance the safety and security of navigation, protect the marine environment, and fully implement internationally recognized maritime standards and obligations. As a nation with one of Africa’s longest coastlines and a strategic position along some of the world’s most important maritime trade routes, Somalia recognizes that a safe, secure, and well-governed maritime domain is essential to its national development and regional stability. Through these accessions, Somalia is laying the foundation for a modern, resilient, and internationally integrated maritime sector that will promote sustainable economic growth, facilitate international trade and investment, strengthen the blue economy, and deepen cooperation with regional and global maritime partners. This milestone marks another significant step in the Government’s broader efforts to restore Somalia’s leadership and credibility within the international maritime community.
