We need to catch up on our history. The area MP, women rep and Senator are all 'murima' Kikuyus who have been there since the early 70s. They have lived there for half a century. How? You may ask? They are the children of Kikuyu families returning from Tanzania alongside other landless post-independence Kenyans. Many of these families had originally migrated south during the 1950s colonial Emergency to seek land and trade, but found themselves displaced in the late 1960s when Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere initiated Ujamaa nationalization policies. Forced out and left destitute upon returning to Kenya, they were directed by Jomo Kenyatta’s administration to the remote mainland of Lamu.
