More than a decorative element, the arbor was a masterpiece of medieval engineering. It transformed European architecture and allowed some of the tallest and brightest buildings in the world to be built for centuries, many of which continue to defy time nearly 900 years later.

Passive design strategies like deep eaves, strategic landscaping, pergolas, and horizontal louvres can control solar radiation, reduce direct solar heat gain, and enhance comfort. By combining thoughtful shading with natural ventilation, these approaches create cooler, more energy-efficient spaces while maintaining a strong connection to the outdoors.

This system is called the “Canadian well.” The essence is very simple: at a depth of 2-3 meters, the earth always holds a stable temperature of about +10... +15°C. In the winter, the cold air from the street goes through an underground pipe and heats up before entering the house. ☀️ In the summer, the hot air is cooled down in the same pipe. That is, the earth functions as both a natural conditioner and a heater. It does not replace heating or air conditioning completely, but it greatly reduces costs and makes the air in the house more comfortable 👍

Leaving a bulky, industrial AC unit exposed on a pitched roof is a visual disaster. It breaks the architectural silhouette and creates a harsh clash between cold metal and the natural texture of the tiles.

A retaining wall can fail long before the blocks or concrete lose their structural integrity, primarily because trapped water has no escape route. This demonstrates the critical difference between a wall that suffers from hydrostatic pressure due to trapped water and one strategically designed with proper drainage features, including clean gravel backfill, filter fabric, weep holes, and a perforated drainpipe. A well-designed retaining wall is not merely about holding soil back; it is essential to create a controlled pathway for water to exit the system efficiently.

Staircases can be far more than functional elements—they can become defining architectural features that shape the character of an entire space. This collection explores different approaches to stair design, from floating treads and sculptural curves to integrated storage, dramatic suspended details, and bold material expressions. What makes each example stand out is the way structure, material, light, and movement come together to create something visually memorable. Whether crafted from timber, concrete, or a combination of materials, these staircases demonstrate how thoughtful detailing can transform a simple connection between floors into a powerful piece of architecture.

A pergola can do more than define an outdoor space—it can influence the microclimate around it. In summer, the leafy canopy provides shade and reduces heat gain, creating a cooler, more comfortable outdoor space. In winter, when the vegetation is less dense, more sunlight can reach the space, allowing it to warm naturally. It’s a simple example of how landscape, architecture, and seasonal design can work together to create comfort.
