One thing I find fascinating about Baba Obasanjo and Fada is how two people can move from judging each other from a distance to understanding and loving each other deeply. At the London book launch, Baba made a distinction that got me thinking. There is Charles Oputa, the son of Justice Oputa, the man who cared for his father and showed up for his family. Then there is CharlyBoy, the rebellious, unconventional, jagajaga Area Fada that everybody knows. But according to Baba, if you judge CharlyBoy only by the public image, you will completely misjudge the man. And that is the lesson! Sometimes, we are so quick to judge people by their appearance, their lifestyle, their public reputation or what we hear about them that we never bother to discover who they really are. Fada and Baba have gone beyond the surface. They have talked about life, exchanged perspectives and discovered sides of each other that the public may never see. Today, I walk through something wey words no fit fully capture. Standing side by side with Baba Olusegun Obasanjo and my brother Aliko Dangote, I take another look at wetin vision, courage and persistence fit build. This refinery no be small project. E be like city inside city. As we dey waka through the massive structures, pipelines and facilities, one thing keep ringing for my head: One man’s dream fit become national asset. People dey always talk about wetin Nigeria no get. Today, I see wetin Nigeria fit become when ambition meet execution. The love from workers and visitors wey stop to take pictures, gist and share moments with us reminded me of something important: People still dey hungry for hope. Not the hope wey politicians dey promise every election season. The hope wey you can touch. The hope wey you can see. The hope wey stand physically before your eyes. As Baba, Dangote and I stood together for photographs, I no just see three men. I see three different journeys. Different paths. Different convictions. But one lesson: Never underestimate wetin one determined human being fit achieve. Nigeria still get challenges. Plenty. But days like this remind me say possibility still dey alive. And sometimes, seeing is believing.

Each time I see Baba and Fada, na so I go dey fall in Love with dia exceptional bounding as father and son. Sometimes, the people who love you don’t announce themselves. Baba just stormed Fada’s studio in Ajah. No long notice. No “I’m coming tomorrow.” No warning. And from the look on Fada’s face, I could tell that this one no dey the agenda at all. But that’s the beauty of some relationships. There are people who don’t need an invitation before they come to check on you. They don’t need a special occasion. They don’t need a birthday. They don’t need you to call first. Sometimes, they just want to see you. Yes, for almost 10 days Fada was down with the flue. Somehow, Baba heard of it and decided to visit his adopted son, Fada. In a world where everybody is busy chasing one thing or another, never underestimate the power of somebody simply showing up.
