Imagine telling your family you're NOT going to medical school, then putting your adult film DVD on the table. After working in hospice care, she realized how deeply she was affected by losing patients she'd grown close to. When she started questioning whether medicine was really the future she wanted, her family assumed it was something she'd eventually “get over.” Then she dropped the DVD. Just because you're part of the same community doesn't mean everybody gets along. When Blake Lovely entered the adult industry, she expected the relatively small community of trans performers to feel like one big sisterhood. What she found was much more complicated. There are friendships, disagreements, personalities and politics, just like any other workplace. Blake says those divisions became especially noticeable around Donald Trump's election, with performers holding very different political views and some members of the trans community strongly opposing Trump over concerns about transgender rights. But disagreement doesn't necessarily mean people can't work together. Blake says performers who would never grab a drink together can still show up on set, respect each other's work and be professionals. Her approach has always been to try to bring people together, even when attempting to bridge those divides can create controversy of its own.
