Over 50K returnees have streamed back to Zimbabwe from South Africa. What immediate impact will that have on the South African economy? Will the jobs they leave behind, whether as employees or skilled tradesmen, simply be filled by South Africans, or is there an unavoidable economic cost? What happens to sectors already grappling with critical skills shortages and will international investors still be willing to come to the party if labour uncertainty becomes entrenched? Finally, are those in South Africa legally, safe from being caught in the political and social crossfire? Is Pretoria doing enough?

The O Level was never designed as a universal school-leaving qualification. In Britain, where it originated, it was intended for roughly the top 20% of pupils on the academic grammar school track. The remaining 80% followed vocational and technical pathways. Yet Zimbabwe persists with the fiction that every child should clear an examination never meant for everyone. The predictable result is that fewer than a third “pass”, while the majority are casually branded failures. Rural industrialisation begins by abandoning this absurdity. Every province should define its own labour absorption strategy around its comparative advantages, whether agriculture, mining, fishing or manufacturing. A minority should pursue the academic route. The majority should graduate with recognised certificates of vocational or technical competence, developed and championed by industry itself. That is how productive labour is created and productive labour is how economies grow. Share your thoughts

Is there a viable business case for Air Zimbabwe relaunching the Harare London route, through a wet lease or otherwise? I remember flying both Air Zimbabwe and British Airways. AirZim was cheaper, but its flights were often delayed and barely occupied. BA was usually full. To succeed in a highly competitive industry where even SAA has struggled, Air Zimbabwe must completely re-engineer its business model and work twice as hard to win customers. Convenience alone is not a convincing moat.

SA’s illegal immigration crisis is partly an economic policy failure and partly strategic misdirection by its corporates. 25 years ago, SA was awash with capital. Instead of investing into Africa, much of that capital went further afield into Europe. African risk was higher, yes, but deeper investment would have created opportunity across the region and somewhat reduced migration pressure. It would also have given Pretoria more political will to push reform in neighbouring countries. What do you think?

Can the Zimbabwean economy be worth US$52bn when the latest World Bank report records that 45% of our society is living under extreme poverty. As we plan for 2026 it’s important to be embedded in reality than in government numbers that serve a political outcome and not necessarily economic. What do you think?

A right should exist without imposing an obligation on anyone else, arising instead through natural cause, like the right to breathe. Yet GoZ has declared healthcare a right and gone further by stripping private hospitals of their property rights, compelling them to provide emergency care. After what GoZ did to PSMAS & public hospitals, how long before private hospitals are bankrupted, given that emergency care accounts for more than 50% of their revenue? And when long queues become the norm, what incentive will remain for anyone to keep paying?

The Government of Zimbabwe intends to introduce a Statutory Instrument prohibiting medical aid societies from owning medical service providers such as clinics and pharmacies. Beyond being anti “open for business,” this move risks decimating the medical insurance sector in the same way policy and monetary instability destroyed confidence in the pension sector. The real problem is not vertical integration by medical aid societies. The real problem is hyperinflation, currency instability and the collapse of confidence in our monetary system. Medical insurance has simply found a way to work around that dysfunction. The proposed SI will likely lead to a sharp increase in medical fees and it is customers who will suffer most. The doctors and pharmacists lobbying for this measure are being anti-business and ultimately, acting against their own long-term interests. A better response would be for them to come together and establish medical aid societies that can rival the existing players. If we destroy medical aid societies, customers will not suddenly rush to private doctors and pharmacies. Many will simply stop using formal doctors and pharmacies altogether, as we have seen in parts of Africa where medical aid systems collapsed.

Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEP) have existed in one form or another since 2009, meaning many Zimbabweans have lived and worked in South Africa under temporary exemption regimes for over 15 years. The current ZEP has been extended until 28 May 2027, keeping holders legally resident and economically active during that period. However, ZEP holders remain excluded from ordinary immigration rights under South African law such as permanent residence pathways that other migrants can access, a distinction many regard as fundamentally unfair given their long-term presence and contribution. Adv Simba Chitando goes into great depth challenging the South African government to abide by its own rules on immigration. Do you think ZEP holders should have the same rights as all the other legal immigrants? Why has SA government hesitated in giving them full rights?

Captain Obet Mazinyi left Air Zimbabwe in 1989 after an embarrassing moment: he had flown from London to Harare, only to find himself hitching a ride home from one of his passengers. It is a situation many professionals in Zimbabwe still relate to today. In a twist worthy of a proverb, after many senior years at Cathay Pacific, he was interviewed in 2017 for the CEO role at Air Zim. He still believes AirZim has a competitive advantage based on its wide network of approved destinations, Zimbabwe’s central geographic position and the natural demand created by diaspora and tourist traffic. In his view, the opportunity has always been there. What has been missing is the professional execution needed to turn that advantage into a successful national carrier.

In light of businessmen now firmly inside the citadel of state power in Zimbabwe, it is worth looking back at how the rising black business class of the 1990s was targeted because it was seen as a political threat by the political class. What lessons can we draw? Nic Vingirai lost everything on trumped up charges only to be exonerated later. He still hasn’t got full access to his farms despite being a black farmer. Will the current crop of business leaders now acting as power courtiers navigate the Zim terrain better than those before them?

Farming is a vocation that requires 24/7 attention on the farm. And perhaps special talent like the Dutch compared to the rest of Europe. One cannot farm by cellphone and expect a good harvest. The farmer is either inefficient, or sitting on a disaster waiting to happen. Is this the case with our new farmers? What has been your experience?

Is Zimbabwe overtaxed? A debate with Treasury Permanent Secretary George Guvamatanga. Government benchmarks itself against peers and prefers to sit at the mean. On that basis, the 10% gold royalty is now being reduced back to 5%. But here is the tension. If GDP is growing at 5% while tax revenues are growing at 18%, the state is clearly taking a larger slice of the same cake. That looks less like growth and more like fiscal aggression. GG disagrees. His argument is that revenue growth reflects improved compliance, base broadening, and efficiency rather than higher effective taxation. Listen to his reasoning and decide for yourself: is Zimbabwe genuinely undertaxed, or the state aggressive?

Dangote explains why it is important to pay investors in US dollars. Let’s pass that message to the RBZ and Treasury. Zimbabwe’s competitive advantage today is the use of dollars. The multicurrency regime must be guaranteed in perpetuity. We still have foreign investors who, since 2016, have not been able to repatriate dividends, interest and money stuck in Zim. Worse still, some were given TB’s maturing in 2040. Legacy blocked funds are over US$2 billion. This history means any talk of a monocurrency regime spooks both domestic and foreign investors. Dangote also speaks about policy inconsistency as another major risk factor in Africa. Investors need policy consistency over a long period.

The entry of Starlink into Zimbabwe has been generally good as the market benefitted from lower tariffs and competition. But it has also brought up issues like Fair Usage Policy (FUP) . Some users abused the new market offering like SmartBiz from Econet. Rufaro and Ranga help us in understanding the globally applicable rule of fair use.

The Godfather of Indigenous Banking and Entrepreneurship in Zimbabwe. Nicholas Vingirai is brilliant in every possible way and helped many Black entrepreneurs in Zimbabwe and across Africa. He is a legend and his story needs to be heard by every Zimbabwean. It is a classic case of just how extraordinary Zimbabwean talent was and how other nations often get the very best of us while, in our own country, some of the most talented entrepreneurs were stopped dead in their tracks. I went to Nigeria after its banking crisis of 2007 and marvelled at how they retained and rejuvenated their local banks, the same banks that are now spread across the continent. Yet Zimbabwean bankers were far ahead of their time. Were it not for the glitch that reversed everything, who knows where our great indigenous banks would be today? Nigeria learnt from its earlier mistakes of targeting entrepreneurs in the early 1990s and today it has a much better appreciation of what Black entrepreneurs can do. Mawere is gone, Strive remains in exile and Zimbabwe has still not fully defined, or given permission for, entrepreneurs to thrive again as they did in the 1990s before the abrupt stop in 2004.
