We are about to see one of the largest rain events that’s ever been triggered in the continental United States by a Pacific Hurricane. After making landfall in Baja California, the saturated remnants of former-Category 5 Hurricane Polo are going to inject a massive conveyor belt of deep, tropical moisture up through NW Mexico and into the U.S. South-Central Texas could be at the epicenter of the event, with isolated rain totals potentially reaching up to a FOOT this week.

Right now, there are 250 people on Socorro Island, Mexico staring down at the 175 MPH (280 kph) fury of Hurricane Polo to their southeast. The good news here is that the storm is going to curve around the western side of this remote volcanic island, keeping the catastrophic eyewall offshore and avoiding a landfall. Heavy rain, winds, and surf should be the extent of the impacts.

It’s very rare for a Hurricane to reach 180 MPH winds at all. It’s almost unheard of for one to reach it TWICE. That’s what Hurricane Polo just did today. Two distinct, completely separate 180 MPH peak intensity phases during completely different stages of the cyclonic life cycle. What we’re seeing take place near Mexico’s Pacific coast this week is nothing short of the meteorologically exceptional.

The National Hurricane Center has raised Hurricane Simon to an even stronger peak intensity of 155 MPH (250 kph) and 928 MBAR. If the storm follows the exact track of the latest cone, then the tiny fishing village of Pérula could be annihilated. In this current possible scenario, Simon’s eastern eyewall would strike the village with full-force. Beachside homes that aren’t destroyed by extreme Category 4 winds would likely be swept into a devastating storm surge, created by the Hurricane’s direct onshore flow into Pérula’s bay-shaped eddy of coastline. Flash flooding and mudslides down the mountains surrounding the village would also be possible. However, the tiniest shifts either east or west would completely change the level of impacts for Pérula. They might not even feel Simon’s eyewall and escape relatively unscathed. Every trend in the storm’s motion needs to be monitored now as he closes in on Mexico.

This is where the flash superflood on the Nepal-Tibet border today first began. From an altitude of 17,000 ft on Langtang Lirung in the Himalayas, a ~2,000 ft-wide chunk of glacier ice snapped off and fell ~4,000 ft to the valley below, generating an impact 6.3% as powerful as the Hiroshima nuclear explosion and causing a Magnitude 5.2 seismic event. Upon impact, this massive ice chunk was then pulverized into a violent 100+ ft-tall surge of glacier water, rocks, and mud that flowed into the nearby Trishuli River. Funneled by Nepal’s extremely steep and jagged terrain, the resulting flood wave became an unsurvivable wall of water and debris for the immediate communities downstream.

The NHC forecast for Hurricane Polo has taken a slightly concerning turn for the rural desert communities of Baja California, Mexico. Instead of making landfall as a weakening CAT 1, it now appears that Polo may instead strike land as an intense, 111+ MPH (180+ kph) CAT 3, which would make him only the 4TH Major Hurricane on record to hit the peninsula. Wind shear in the area is progressively decreasing, and water temps remain at a succulent ~84 F (29 C). Hurricane Warnings are in effect from Estero de la Bocana to Puerto San Carlos.
