Star Wars pioneered so many special effects that we take for granted today. When filming the destruction of Alderaan in Star Wars, the effects team at Industrial Light & Magic used a surprisingly simple practical effect. The planet was a painted sphere suspended in front of a black backdrop. To create the explosion, they rigged the miniature with pyrotechnics and filmed it with high-speed cameras at a faster frame rate so the blast would appear massive and cinematic when slowed down. One interesting detail is that the explosion was partially achieved using gasoline and powdered cement. The cement gave the blast a heavier, planetary look rather than a quick fireball. Because the miniature exploded outward so quickly, the slowed footage helped sell the illusion of an entire planet tearing apart in space. The shot lasts only a few seconds in the final film but became one of the most iconic visual effects moments in cinema history, created years before CGI existed. (Original 1977 footage)

It’s probably a good thing this was deleted from The Empire Strikes Back 😂 During the evacuation of Echo Base, this Snowtrooper unknowingly opens a door the Rebels had marked as dangerous, only to be immediately grabbed by the Wampa trapped inside. It’s such a weirdly slapstick moment in the middle of one of the most intense sequences in Star Wars. You can definitely see why they decided it didn’t fit the final cut.
