Recently, a deputy conducted a traffic stop on the Diagonal Highway near Highway 52 for expired plates. During the stop, the driver reached into her glovebox to retrieve her registration and unknowingly grabbed a self-defense pistol (compressed air pistol with the capability of shooting different types of rounds) that was stored inside. While it is not a traditional firearm, it closely resembles a real handgun, and in that moment, it looked like one to the deputy. Situations like this can escalate quickly. Reaching for an object that appears to be a weapon, without first telling us it’s there, creates a serious safety risk for everyone involved. - If you have any weapon in your vehicle, firearm or otherwise, inform us immediately. - Avoid storing weapons in gloveboxes or areas where you’ll be reaching during a traffic stop. - Keep your hands visible and communicate clearly before moving. Clear communication helps keep encounters calm and safe. The driver in this case was also cited for: - Revoked license (with multiple active suspensions) - No insurance - Driving without a required ignition interlock device Traffic stops are one of the most common and potentially unpredictable interactions law enforcement officers have. A little preparation and communication can go a long way toward ensuring everyone goes home safely. As in every criminal case, these charges are merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty.

On Sunday, April 12, 2026, at approximately 8:15 p.m., the Boulder County Communications Center received a report of climbers in need of assistance on the Naked Edge climbing route in Eldorado Canyon State Park. A group of three climbers reported they were unable to continue their ascent after losing their route and not having headlamps as darkness fell. The lead climber was positioned on pitch five of the route, while the two additional climbers remained on pitch four. The climbers encountered challenges with rope management and pace, resulting in becoming delayed on the route after nightfall. Rocky Mountain Rescue Group (RMRG) responded to the technical rescue, and Boulder Emergency Squad (BES) aided with drone support. Rescuers were able to maintain visual contact with one of the lower climbers via drone, while additional rescuers worked to assist the lead climber. Verbal contact was established with the climbers at approximately 10:19 p.m. Rescuers reached the first climber at approximately 10:30 p.m. and provided warming supplies. A rescuer rappelled approximately 105 feet to reach the two lower climbers, securing them at approximately 11:31 p.m.The two climbers on the lower pitch were then assisted in ascending the final pitch of the route, completing the technical portion of the climb at approximately 12:58 a.m. All three climbers safely returned to the trailhead at approximately 2:25 a.m. The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind outdoor enthusiasts of several important safety considerations. Climbers attempting long or technical routes should carefully manage their time and ensure they have a realistic plan to complete their objective well before dark. Always carry reliable headlamps with extra batteries, even for routes expected to be completed during daylight hours. Additionally, climbers should bring sufficient food and water to sustain themselves in the event of delays, as well as appropriate layers to stay warm in rapidly changing mountain weather conditions. Mild daytime temperatures can quickly become cold and hazardous after sunset. The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the dedicated volunteers of Rocky Mountain Rescue Group and Boulder Emergency Squad, whose skill, coordination, and commitment were instrumental in the successful outcome of this rescue. Their willingness to respond at all hours and in challenging conditions continues to make our community safer. On the evening of July 31, 2024, a fire was started and extinguished near Panorama Point on Flagstaff Road just west of the city of Boulder. Investigators with the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office have been working to determine the cause. Eyewitness video from that night show people near Panorama Point with fireworks ignited, and flames are visible. Investigators are working to identify the individuals involved, and we are interested in speaking with them. Sheriff Curtis Johnson, “We will not tolerate this blatant disregard for the life safety of the residents of Boulder County. We were under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions, which prohibits the use of fireworks, with multiple wildfires burning, yet they still recklessly set off fireworks in a grassy and wooded area, which immediately caught fire. It’s only because firefighters were able to quickly get the fire under control that a tragedy didn’t take place.” At this time, investigators are interested in speaking with anyone who has information as to who these individuals are, or anyone with any information related to what occurred on the evening of July 31, 2024, near Panorama Point. Based on current information, the fire started around 9:42 p.m. that evening. Public Safety Training Notification: June 3–7. During the week of June 3 through June 7, multiple Boulder County public safety agencies will be participating in a planned training exercise focused on responding to an active threat incident. This joint training involves law enforcement, fire, EMS, and dispatch personnel working together to practice integrated response protocols through realistic, scenario-based exercises. The training will take place in and around Nevin Platt Middle School, located at 6096 Baseline Road. Community members can expect to see a visible presence of first responders in the area, including police officers, fire trucks, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles. You may also see officers carrying training weapons and ambulances driving around the building as part of the exercise. The area of 55th Street and Baseline Road will have increased activity throughout the week. This is a planned exercise and not a real emergency. Please do not call 911 to report activity related to this training. However, if you see something in the area that you believe is unrelated to the exercise and poses a threat or emergency, please call 911 as you normally would. We encourage residents to share this information with friends and neighbors, especially those who live near the training site, to ensure everyone is aware and not caught off guard by the increased presence of emergency personnel. Heroic Action on Hwy 36: On May 25, 2025, at 5:10 AM, Sgt. McKim stopped a driver who was traveling on the wrong side of Highway 36. The driver reached speeds of up to 110 mph at times, and several cars had to swerve to avoid a head-on collision. Thanks to her quick response, no one was hurt. The driver was arrested without incident and now faces charges including DUI, drug possession, and multiple traffic violations. Well done, Sgt. McKim! If you see a car driving on the wrong side of the road, pull over, stop at a safe location, and call 911 immediately. Boulder Canyon Closed Due to Rock Slide Boulder Canyon is currently closed in both directions due to a rock slide near the 33.3 mile marker, just below Boulder Falls. The road is shut down at the top of the canyon at Hurricane Hill and at the base of the canyon. The Colorado Department of Transportation is en route to assess the scene.
