The Cat And Fiddle - Buxton Rd, Macclesfield, Peak District, SK11 We returned to check on the Cat and Fiddle in the Peak District to find it closed, yet alive and well. This pub/distillery, is classed as the second highest in the UK. Historically, it was a vital, often life saving shelter for horse-drawn carriage travelers, walkers, and traders travelling through the unforgiving, hilly terrain. To this day, it still has to close if the weather becomes too dangerous. Just as it did centuries ago, the roads can become so covered in snow and frost that we're reminded of it's original purpose. When the weather turned, this is a place that people may have had to spend days or longer. But, you'd much rather be cooped up in there than to face the conditions outside. This pub is a reminder of what many pubs actually existed to do. Yes, they're all important for their own reasons, but some pubs really did exist to save lives instead of simply offer a place to drink, rest, or socialise. I always thoroughly enjoy my time in this beautiful part of the world and my time with my good friend Maverik. The Lost Legend Of British Boxing - #RIP The Thomas A Becket (320 #OldKentRoad, South #London, #SE1) 🥊⏳️🍻 #RIP to a legend in the boxing world. This pub once hosted an almighty boxing gym that saw and produced world-class fighters. As well as this, the pub was a chance for local people to earn a few bob or even make themselves wealthy. Just like the Docklands of #EastLondon, this area of #SouthLondon was made up of dock workers living in pre/post war #England. The people of south London's Docklands had next to nothing other than each other, be it for better or for worse. Generations of #Londoners witnessed the massive changes that saw them move out to suburbs like #Kent, leaving this once proud area to become hyper-modernized. The pubs name related to the days of Norman monarchs who were originally Vikings that settled in northern France in the 9th century. In recent times, they're referred to as French and spoke what we often refer to as a French language (Norman). Not only was this venue a place to earn some money, but it was a much needed socializing and venting spot for countless individuals with nothing else to vent their weekly woes. Be it legitimate, or the world of villainy, this pub was more of a home to many people than wherever they slept. So long to the people and the memories that derive from one of London's most impoverished, toughened, and united areas. Today the area is a prime example that just because you fill something up, doesn't mean it isn't empty. Our recent ancestors may have had less than us, but they had far more grit and stoic strength than most today could imagine. #RIP ⚰️ Thank you for all for the support. Still not rebuilt: Let us not forget the tragic tale of the #CrookedHouse, in Himley near Dudley, famously known as "Britain's wonkiest pub," which Vinnie Sullivan. There, in an episode, we asked a few questions we noticed hadn't been asked. Originally built in 1765, its signature slant was caused by 19th-century mining subsidence. Though destroyed by a fire and subsequently and suspiciously demolished in August 2023, the owners were legally ordered by the South Staffordshire Council to rebuild it brick by brick. The ‘Prospect of Whitby’ - A Home For Pirates, Scoundrels and Scallywags (57 #Wapping Wall, #London, #E1W) 🏴☠️🦜🍻 We were given exclusive access to the upstairs of one of #London's oldest and most famous pubs. The Prospect of Whitby is both a museum and a relic to Great #Britain. This was once one of the most dangerous places one could drink whichever side of the law you sat. A range of interesting people, both historic and contemporary, have drank within its walls. The Prospect, like a few other pubs, claims to be the oldest (Thames) Riverside pub in #London. We could have spoken about this pub and its history for hours, but narrowed it down to just under half an hour. Wapping wasn't only dangerous in the golden age of piracy, but it was a vital part of London's shipping trade during the lead up and the height of the British empire. These streets and the warehouses that are now expensive apartments were once the grotty and tough places that the dockers and light men of London endured day in, day out.
