Air and ground resources are actively working to contain the #NorteFire in Orange County. CAL FIRE prepositioned resources were in the area and ready to support initial attack efforts, allowing additional resources to respond quickly. CAL FIRE’s aerial firefighting fleet, the largest civilian aerial firefighting fleet in the world, is supporting ground operations alongside partner agencies with water and retardant drops as firefighters work to contain the fire. Under Red Flag Warning conditions, protecting lives and property and stopping the fire’s spread remain top priorities. Now that’s a flyover. 🚁✈️ Before Sunday’s matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals, our aircraft took to the skies over Levi’s Stadium for a flyover during the National Anthem. Our S-70i Firehawk helicopter and S-2T airtanker gave fans a look at two of the aircraft that help CAL FIRE fight California’s wildfires. Our personnel were also recognized on the field during the game following the flyover. Seven years ago today, a wildfire sparked in Butte County and quickly grew into the Camp Fire—the deadliest wildfire in California’s history. Eighty-five lives were lost. More than 18,800 homes, schools, and businesses were destroyed, and entire neighborhoods were forever changed in a matter of hours. Today, we pause to remember those who lost their lives, the families who carry their memories forward, and the communities that continue to rebuild with strength and resilience. As we look back, we also look ahead with a shared responsibility to learn from the past and continue working to prevent such devastation from happening again. In several hours, the #ParkFire exploded from a 400-acre fire to a more than 71,000-acre inferno consuming everything in its path. Freelance videographer Tim Walton shared footage of the firefight. This is how fast it happens. While crews were responding to the Gann Fire, a new column of smoke appeared. Crews moved in quickly, bringing dozers, aircraft, and firefighters to the fire before it had a chance to grow. Dozers cut containment lines. Aircraft dropped retardant and water. Firefighters attacked from the ground. The Gelding Fire was stopped at 3 acres. For a videographer, getting to capture those first moments is rare. What’s a helitack crew? 🚁 A helitack crew is a team of highly trained firefighters and their pilot who are transported by helicopter to provide rapid initial attack and assist with rescues—particularly in areas that are remote, rugged, or inaccessible by vehicle. Their aerial deployment gets them to the incident within minutes and begin suppression efforts right away. On the ground, they use hand tools, chainsaws, and other equipment to stop a fire’s spread, while the helicopter supports their efforts from above with water drops. In rescues and medical emergencies, a helitack crew can assist with emergencies in hard-to-reach locations. Firefighters are lowered down from the helicopter to provide emergency medical aid, stabilize the patient, and coordinate a safe extraction—often hoisting the individual back into the helicopter for transport to higher care. CAL FIRE operates 10 permanent and 1 cooperative Helitack Bases throughout the state, positioning these crews where they’re needed most. 🚁 Hitting the Floriston Fire from the air and ground. Air tankers and helicopters supporting the #FloristonFire have delivered over 474,000 gallons of water and over 88,600 gallons of retardant, logging more than 122 flight hours — including 13-and-a-half hours of night operations. Meanwhile, crews are building and strengthening containment lines through rugged terrain, with engines, dozers and hand crews working around the perimeter. ✈️ Aviation helps deliver a quick wildfire response. Early detection and an aggressive response are key as CAL FIRE works to keep 95% of wildfires to 10 acres or less. When a half-acre fire was reported near Auburn last month, CAL FIRE and partner agencies quickly responded. The #CombieFire grew to 17 acres and triggered evacuation orders, but no injuries were reported and no homes were destroyed. 🚲 A journey to remember, honor, and reflect. On August 3, CAL FIRE personnel joined firefighters from across the country to cycle from San Francisco to New York (Ground Zero) to honor the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Along the 3,000-mile-long route, riders are remembering the 343, their families, and the many firefighters, military members, and public servants who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others. After more than a month on the road, the riders will arrive in New York on September 11, marking the 25th anniversary of the attacks. The Bay to Brooklyn Memorial Bicycle Ride recognizes the lives lost that day, and the lasting impact September 11 had on the nation and the fire service. Since the attack, an additional 469 firefighters have died from illnesses related to their work at the World Trade Center. #BayToBrooklyn #NeverForget
