This is how fast it happens. While crews were responding to the Gann Fire, a new column of smoke appeared. Crews moved in quickly, bringing dozers, aircraft, and firefighters to the fire before it had a chance to grow. Dozers cut containment lines. Aircraft dropped retardant and water. ✈️ Aviation helps deliver a quick wildfire response. Early detection and an aggressive response are key as CAL FIRE works to keep 95% of wildfires to 10 acres or less. When a half-acre fire was reported near Auburn last month, CAL FIRE and partner agencies quickly responded. The Timber Fire is burning in the Big Sur area along California’s Central Coast, where steep hillsides, rugged terrain, and limited access can make it difficult for firefighters to move safely through the landscape. Essential work to contain the fire, like constructing fireline, requires crews to navigate uneven and remote terrain. That’s where Rapid Extraction Module Support (REMS) teams come in. REMS teams are specialized firefighter medical and rescue teams trained to provide emergency medical care and assist with the extraction of injured firefighters from remote or hazardous terrain. These specialized teams are deployed when firefighters are working in areas where an injury could make evacuation especially difficult. What happens when a wildfire outgrows a local response? When a wildfire grows large or becomes more complex, the local agency in charge may request support from a CAL FIRE Incident Management Team (IMT). So far this year, CAL FIRE IMTs have been activated 4 times to help manage complex incidents. The IMT steps in to take over the day-to-day management of the wildfire, coordinating personnel, aircraft, equipment, safety, and logistics from the agencies working together on the incident. This helps ensure the response stays organized while also allowing the local agency to keep its resources available for other emergencies, fires, and medical calls in its area. What’s a helitack crew? 🚁 A helitack crew is a team of highly trained firefighters and their pilot who are transported by helicopter to provide rapid initial attack and assist with rescues—particularly in areas that are remote, rugged, or inaccessible by vehicle. Their aerial deployment gets them to the incident within minutes and begin suppression efforts right away. On the ground, they use hand tools, chainsaws, and other equipment to stop a fire’s spread, while the helicopter supports their efforts from above with water drops. In rescues and medical emergencies, a helitack crew can assist with emergencies in hard-to-reach locations. Firefighters are lowered down from the helicopter to provide emergency medical aid, stabilize the patient, and coordinate a safe extraction—often hoisting the individual back into the helicopter for transport to higher care. CAL FIRE operates 10 permanent and 1 cooperative Helitack Bases throughout the state, positioning these crews where they’re needed most.
