Governor Healey signed the new $63.4 billion state budget yesterday. She stated, “Massachusetts needs a budget that makes life more affordable and that’s exactly what this delivers.” It adds some funding for housing vouchers, healthcare subsidies, schools, and a modest bump in local aid to cities and towns. In reality, our state budget keeps hitting record highs year after year. Way too much stays locked up in big state agencies, MassHealth bureaucracy, and central programs instead of flowing back directly to cities and towns. That leaves local governments still struggling with property taxes, roads, and services. The 4% increase might help a few targeted programs, but with overall spending this bloated and costs rising fast, most residents probably won’t feel much real relief.
