Better Call Saul was never supposed to be this dramatic. It was initially pitched as a 30-minute comedy. It evolved into a full-blown tragedy. When the show was first planned, the creators imagined a half hour comedy. They thought each episode would focus on Saul Goodman helping a different criminal client with a funny problem. They expected the show to be light and fast. As they started writing, they realized the story needed more depth. They wanted to know how a good man like Jimmy McGill turned into a sleazy lawyer like Saul Goodman. This choice changed the show into a deep drama.
