Detroit cannot say it is serious about poverty reduction while paying its own employees poverty wages. So we're changing that — starting with our own payroll. Mayor Mary Sheffield stood with city employees and union representatives to announce that every full-time City of Detroit employee will earn a minimum of $21.45/hour, which is $44,500 a year. A real livable wage. Nationally, few cities have set the bar this high. Salary increases start early July.
