BREAKING NEWS! As chair of Sheffield Theatres we are delighted that the World Snooker Championships are staying in Sheffield - at The Crucible - until at least 2045! This is a big deal which is worth millions of pounds to the city but also enables us to revamp The Crucible, make it even more special, bring it right up to date and secure it for generations to come. The cost of the project is £45,000,000 and we have secured £35,000,000 worth of government funding and the other 10 is coming from the private sector and some of our partners. A lot of people have worked really hard to get this deal over the line and the city council have put the hours in. We know there are understandable questions about closing The Crucible for a projected 18 months and we will answer all of those. I should say that Sheffield Theatres will keep producing work in the Lyceum and the Montgomery while the Crucible is getting refurbished with capacity for an extra 500 seats. We feel that the benefits of this deal give us the chance to secure a sporting and theatrical legacy for Sheffield. Years go by and I can’t stop thinking about how incredible the 2030s will be. We're so close. Even if progress somehow continued at today’s pace, which it won’t, because it’s clearly accelerating every single year. What we’re seeing now is just the beginning. AI, biotech, energy, robotics, everything is compounding at once. Each breakthrough is feeding the next. The pace won’t stay linear. It never does. Just hold on a few more years. The world on the other side is going to feel almost unrecognizable. Below is just a small peek at the wealth level that ASI, automation, robotics, and other late 2020s technologies can bring. This could be a random city in Nigeria. Although millions of people will be living in their own types of environments in full-dive VR. In simulations everyone will be able to own planets worth of real estate, and it will feel as real as "real life." Everyone will be able to design 1000s of new cities/new realities every day (with the help of ASI, of course).

That means approx 20 cents for every dollar of general fund taxes, will go to pay retirement costs. According to the city report, the combination of record high staffing and generous pay increases is causing this large increase. It’s not the fault of city employees for accepting a generous pay package, but it is the fault of city leaders making unsustainable management decisions, especially while city performance decreases. Without a major organizational restructuring, the City will likely be forced to dip into GF reserves in FY 2027 and be out of money by FY 2028.

And it is difficult to hear. It is also a reminder that the silence that often greets this kind of bigotry, this kind of Islamophobia, is what allows it to fester, the temptation to treat it as politics as usual. I am not ashamed of who I am. I am not ashamed of my faith. I am not ashamed of being the first Muslim mayor in the history of our city. And there is no amount of racism that will change the way in which I lead or the commitment that I hold to each and every New Yorker in this city.
