Motherwell In Possession I've been so impressed by Motherwell's performance and style this season. After watching back their 5-0 win from Saturday, I noticed a few key themes/principles of their play in possession: • Principle 1 - attackers occupy the spaces between FBs & CBs. This keeps opposition FBs pinned back and allows for moments to exploit opposition miscommunication. • Principle 2 - the "tapered box" in deep build-up: 2 CBs with wide positioning; 2 CMs with narrow positioning. Allows M'Well to comfortably progress the ball forward using diagonal & bounce passes. Attracts pressure from St Mirren, creating lots of space between defence & midfield to exploit. • Principle 3 - the use of 1-touch play to change the tempo. 1-touch passing disoriented St Mirren at times and didn't allow them to get appropriate pressure on the ball. It was also evident, especially on the left, that only 1 player needs to hold width (Longelo), Slattery was given a licence to roam inside and create overloads in the midfield, making it difficult for the St Mirren midfield. I genuinely believe if they had a proper goalscorer in the 1st part of the season M'well would have been top of the league as they have consistently been the best side.

Scotland 🏴 vs Japan 🇯🇵 Analysis In Possession concerns • Kicking long to the wrong area of the pitch and/or not structured to win 2nd balls • Refusing to break through lines of pressure both in our own 3rd and the middle 3rd. Since the Euros, in competitive games, we have created more xG from open-play than our opponents only twice - Poland (H) & Belarus (A). Stats via FotMob I understand it's great to be going to our first World Cup in 28 years but, I would love it if when we got there, we were competitive and got through to the knockouts. Watching us play Japan on Saturday highlighted concerns about how we attempt to control phases of matches and create chances. You may need to pause the video at points to read the text, if anyone thinks a voice-over style video would be better let me know.

Celtic In Possession vs Rangers 1st Half vs 2nd Half 1st half: • CB's played long passes looking for runners in-behind. Safety 1st approach - lack of 'up-back-through' passing patterns. • "U-shaped" build-up along back 4, easy to press. • McGregor isolated - lack of additional midfield support to find the free man (usually opposite CB). • FBs & Wingers both on touchline - lack of rotation. 2nd half: • The 'Hatate' factor - added quality, gave McGregor support, asked more questions of Rangers' midfield. • FBs & Wingers stop receiving on the same line - FBs moved inside at times allowing CB to pass directly into Tounekti / Forrest. • As Rangers tired, Celtic were able to further utilise their 3v2 in midfield, causing defenders to jump out and gaps to appear.

Celtic Defending Corners 🟢⚪️ The video has graphics with important information, however to expand on this: - Conceded a goal from a corner in each of the last 3 games since Nancy arrived, albeit one was an O.G. - Marking system is very man-to-man orientated. - Markers then outmatched by their opponents both in terms of height and aerial aggressiveness. - Scales and Trusty are both capable in the air but are being dragged out into negligible positions by decoy runs, they'd be more effective attacking the ball from a zonal position in the centre. - No zonal players on the centre of the 6 yard box, where high xG chances are conceded, see the post I wrote about Hearts' goals from corners earlier in the season.

Rangers in-possession issues v Panathinaikos - 1st Half • Lack of runs in-behind (not utilised when they were made) • Poor rest defence, both inverted backs often high, space down the sides • Technical issues: Raskin not using his left foot; Aarons & Danilo poor touches/decisions • Can be more patient but up the ball speed to move opposition It's still early days, at least you can see patterns emerging...unlike under Clement.

Since the end of November I've been working with Stirling Albion as an Opposition Analyst with a strong focus on set-pieces. We've already had some success with 3 goals from corners - more than the previous 4 months. This is thanks to the coaching staff who have been really receptive and relayed the messages to the players who have performed brilliantly on the pitch in the last few weeks. Thanks to Tony McMinn and the gaffer for the opportunity and the feedback so far. I'm looking forward to continuously improving and helping the club progress up the table. Below is a snippet of the analysis I've provided. An area of weakness in the opponent's set-up was identified - that's the area where the opening goal is scored from in last weeks win.

Aberdeen Defending Set-Pieces 25/26 Video & Data Analysis For the past two seasons Aberdeen have arguably been the worst performing team in the Premiership for Goals & xG conceded from Set-Pieces. Aberdeen have changed from man-marking to a more hybrid structure recently. The main points from my analysis below: • Not enough aerially dominant profiles - leads to sub-optimal players in important zones or defending dangerous opponents. • Lack of (quick) organisation, players unsure of their roles. • Man-marking system exploited - players leaving their opponent free / being blocked Video Analysis below. Set-piece analysis Aberdeen defending corners - THREAD 🔴⚪️🧵 There's been a lot of negativity around Aberdeen's ability to defend corners over the last two seasons. This has dramatically improved over the course of the first few games of this season due to a move away from a hybrid strategy to more a man-to-man strategy. There was a lot of discourse last night regarding the comical looking nature of the defending for Dundee Utd's 2nd goal, however, I'd like to give a lot of credit to Utd's corner routine and the way they went about getting a player free. There's 2 examples in the video below. M2M systems are susceptible to blocks and screens but there's never a perfect system, as I'll show with Aberdeen's strategy last season in this thread.
