We’ve all seen the way that Australia came together in 05 against Uruguay, voted our greatest ever sporting moment. In 06, in Germany. In 2022, Round of 16 against Messi. In 2023, with the home World Cup, over 11 million Aussies watching the quarter final. And now, again, the Socceroos captivating the nation in 2026. Bringing us all together. Something we need more than ever. Anthony Albanese must surely have gotten it, by now. An investment in Australian football achievement, is an investment in Australia itself. Over to you.

Love this. Australians shouldn’t leave people behind because they do things differently. We get around them. And lift them up. That’s what we learn as team athletes, anyway. Raygun stepped up and did her stuff in front of the world, her way. Not everyone can say that in life. It took guts to be different. And certainly to keep smiling, and dancing after the barrage she received. Well done to her. And to the AUS Olympic Team Very, very cool.

Idiots. Hey Americans, This one got out alive. Don’t ever touch our wildlife unless in a controlled environment with highly trained Australians, and only Australians, present to save your life. Every animal and insect in Australia has evolved to eat you, bite you in half, strangle you, inject you with poison, suck your blood, punch you, divebomb from the sky, send you into a coma or, at the very least and only if in a good mood, just take a limb or two. Think of Australia as a stress test for humans. That’s the way we like it. So hands off. Or hands gone. Now go home.

This is abhorrent behaviour. Netanyahu is a wanted war criminal, indicted by the International Criminal Court. He should be immediately arrested by any country that purports to support international law. The fact that any politician, or party in Australia or elsewhere would indicate they would not follow through on their obligations under international law is extremely disturbing. It places every Australian at risk as it undermines the very system of rules that underpins our rights including basics like consular protection abroad, human rights protections, aside from basic sovereignty and territorial integrity without which the world is lawless. Australia is obligated under the treaties we have signed to support the independence and rulings of the international justice system which includes the duty to prevent genocide where sufficient evidence exists to invoke that duty, and to end apartheid where legally established by the ICJ. This requires sanctions and all measures to bring it to an end. Our duties are very clear. They do not change according to the case, the State, the individual or any other factor. Netanyahu is a wanted war criminal. And Australia should deliver him to The Hague. As we would any other. Being committed to the arrest of Putin, Duterte or Netanyahu is not a reflection of Australia’s regard or otherwise for our local communities, and should never be characterised as such for political gain, but of our unwavering commitment to justice under the international law established with our direct and proud involvement, and on which our future relies.

Lex Marinos was a legend of ‘Kingswood Country’, a culturally significant series that captured Australia’s relationship with immigration in the 80’s perfectly. Known in the show as a ‘wog’, Lex was also a part of the ‘wogball’ family with legendary Greek-Australian football club, Sydney Olympic. In football, we’re immensely proud of our contribution to multiculturalism, a vital home for our growing cultural diversity long before it became a loved part of Australian life. Lex was an important part of that process. He passed away in recent days. Rest well. (Worryingly, this scene sounds like many politicians today, 40 years later.)

Politics rarely leads. The most important social and political change has, and by design must, always come from the people. Unfortunately, it takes too long, as politics resists, media condemns. As history shows, everyone has something to protect, a reason not to be brave. Sometimes, it happens faster, because something triggers the masses. A threshold is reached. People can’t stand anymore. They take to the streets, risk themselves, choose what is right over what is safe, the zeitgeist shifts, and politics responds. There were extensive anti-apartheid protests in Australia over 40 years, for example, spanning from the late 1940’s through the 1980’s. The 1971 South African Springbok rugby union tour of Australia sparked widespread protests across the country. Activists disrupted matches, blocked team movements and led marches, resulting in arrests, a state of emergency in Queensland, and the cancellation of a planned cricket tour. Eventually, Australia applied sanctions and in some ways, led. Today, we are immensely proud of the role we played. The patterns are not new. They just repeat. Those Australians carried a fierce love, the kind that doesn’t back down, the kind humanity most needs. Standing against genocide, apartheid, illegal occupation, the deliberate starvation of children and for all innocent people is never wrong. Doesn’t matter where it is. It is confronting, yes, irrespective of the media framing or power dynamics of today, Australia will take immense pride that 300,000+ people chose to confront mass injustice, protect innocent children, support international law, commit to shared humanity and demand a just peace. Unfortunately, it’s not enough. It’ll take many more. The children of Gaza will need you, too.

In Bathurst for a very important corroboree to commemorate the bicentenary of this day, August 14 in 1824 when martial law was imposed on the Wiradjuri people in Bathurst. This is the first corroboree on top of Mount Panorama for many, many decades. Here to learn about the colony-sanctioned slaughter of Aboriginal people in this area as part of what’s now known as the ‘frontier wars.’ The Wiradjuri call it the ‘homeland wars’ since it was their home. Today’s a good day to read about what happened, learn more about our shared history. And historical truths we were never taught. Only through truth and understanding can we heal and come together.

Yesterday the respected scientific organisation Copernicus released data for 2024 and it’s not good, at all. Last year was the hottest on record for 170 years and that comes as no suprise because the hottest 10 years on record have come in the last 10. The graphs are going up, the predictive trend says that human life will be fundamentally affected and climate breakdown will be very serious. It affects every human. Human mobility will vastly increase and among other aspects, the impact on migration given the trends in the other direction are extremely worrying. Humans need to work together across political, ideological, religious boundaries in everyone’s interest. Our kids, theirs, and theirs. Young people everywhere. That’s why I’ve supported the @dutyofcarecampaign by young Aussies calling on the government to take their interests into account in every decision. We shouldn’t have to ask, really. Hope you are able to take some time to reflect on 2024 and look ahead to the new year. In doing so, there is much that needs collective voice and action. Issues that affect us all, humanity, and the only planet we have, and without relying on billionaires to find a new one while allowing this one to degrade and people to suffer. 2025 is a good time to renew our commitment to each other, to shared human rights and objective standards of conduct among countries, and to directing actions and resources towards a sustainable future for our kids. In light of the data that says around 600,000 people in Australia are working below their skill level or in an unrelated industry because their skills aren’t recognised, I’ve travelled around Sydney to speak to a few people affected. Saddiqi’s is a particularly egregious example. An engineer, he spent years trying to get recognised while working in security, as a driver and many other odd jobs to survive. This in spite of the shortage of skilled workers in construction. During this time, his family suffered, his wife passed away, his whole life was directly impacted unnecessarily. Just give us a chance to prove ourselves, he said, if we don’t square up, boot us. But at least give us a program to bridge the gaps, cultural or otherwise. Makes perfect sense to me. And works for us all, boosting lives, helping hundreds of thousands of families, creating additional jobs, helping the economy. Check the report out at SSI
