CHENNAI POLICE APPREHEND 285 CRIMINALS IN CITYWIDE SPECIAL DRIVE AGAINST ROWDIES The city police apprehended 285 people with criminal backgrounds, including history-sheeted rowdies, during a special drive conducted by police across Chennai over the past 24 hours, from 6 pm on Thursday to 6 pm on Friday. The operation was carried out on the directions of Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A Amalraj, as part of measures to prevent criminal activities and maintain law and order. Teams comprising inspectors and police personnel conducted searches under the supervision of assistant commissioners and deputy commissioners in their respective zones. During the operation that went on the whole night of Sept 10 and continued until the evening of Sept 11, police apprehended 108 people in the North Zone, 38 in the West Zone, 94 in the South Zone and 45 in the East Zone. The drive followed a series of murders linked to disputes between rival groups in the city. Kannan was hacked to death in Besant Nagar in a revenge attack, while supporting actor Pradeep Raj was murdered in Thiruvottiyur following a dispute over a loan. The investigation into Pradeep Raj’s murder also led senior police officers to examine the role of a police inspector in the events preceding the killing. Police said the drive covered people listed in A+, A and B categories of the police history sheets, along with C-category offenders. The operation was aimed at preventing further violence by monitoring and taking action against people with criminal records. Police said inquiries were being conducted against those apprehended and further legal action would be taken based on their involvement in criminal activities. TVK FUNCTIONARY MURDERED DUE TO PREVIOUS ENMITY SINCE 2009 DCP, ADYAR KARTHIKEYAN SHUNTED TO VACANCY RESERVE Five men were arrested on Sunday for the murder of 45-year-old history-sheeter Kannan at Vannanthurai in Besant Nagar. The TVK functionary Kannan, who ran a car rental business for IT companies, was standing on Ellaiyamman Koil Street in Ramasamy Avenue when a group of men arrived on two-wheelers, attacked him with knives and fled. He died at the spot. Following this, Adyar deputy commissioner of police Karthikeyan has been vacant reserve (VR) by the DGP Mahesh Kumar Aggarwal. A complaint was lodged by Kannan’s cousin Purushothaman, 33, at Shastri Nagar police station. Police formed a special team under the supervision of the Adyar deputy commissioner and led by the assistant commissioner and inspector of Shastri Nagar station. The team arrested Bharani, 20, of Rukmani Nagar, Adyar; Rakesh, 20, of Govindarajapuram, Adyar; Naresh, 20, of Periyar Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur; Manikandan, 20, of Kottur; and Hariharan, 20, of Indira Nagar, Adyar. Police said the murder was linked to a cycle of retaliatory killings between two groups from Adyar and Thiruvanmiyur. In 2009, Siva, Bharani’s paternal uncle, was murdered by Kannan and his associates in Adyar. Siva’s faction later retaliated by killing Mangaleri Kandan in 2013. In 2016, Kandan’s faction killed Siva’s brother Velu near Nandanam. Police said Bharani and his associates killed Kannan as a counter-attack for Velu’s murder. VETERAN ACTOR RADHA FILES POLICE COMPLAINT AGAINST HER SISTER ACTOR AMBIKA OVER Rs 49.8 CRORE CHEQUE FRAUD Veteran actor Radha alias Udayachandrika lodged a complaint with the Chennai Police Commissioner on Monday, claiming that five signed blank cheques belonging to her were taken from her room and later filled in and presented for encashment in the name of her sister, actor Ambika Nair. The five cheques had a combined face value of Rs 49.8 crore, which has been withheld by the bank after the bank manager verified with actor Radha, who in turn issued a stop payment. Her petition has been forwarded to the forgery wing of the central crime branch for further investigation. In her complaint, Radha said she ran RR Gardens on Arcot Road, Porur, and maintained a current account with IDBI Bank, Porur branch. She said a cheque book - ARS Garden - issued in 2022 contained the five cheque numbers that were later presented for encashment. Radha said she frequently travelled between Chennai, Kerala, Mumbai and Bengaluru and used to keep five or six signed blank cheques in her room to meet business expenses in her absence. She said Ambika also stayed in the ground-floor portion of a house in Valasaravakkam and had access to her portion of the premises. According to the complaint, Radha received an email from her bank on Sept 17 informing her that the old cheques had been presented for encashment. The cheque values were for Rs 11 lakh, Rs 13.17 crore, Rs 27.73 crore, Rs 7 crore and Rs 1.79 crore. Radha said she immediately asked the bank to stop payment, stating that the cheques had been taken and used without her knowledge. She said she had not issued them to Ambika towards any debt or financial liability and claimed that there had been no monetary transaction between them. She further stated that bank verification showed that the cheques had been filled in handwriting she identified as that of her brother, Mallikarjuna Kunjan Nair alias Arjun Nair. She alleged that Ambika and Mallikarjuna entered her room in her absence, took the signed empty cheques in the name of ARS Garden, filled in the details, and presented them for payment. The issue came to light after Radha changed ARS Garden to RR Garden, and fresh cheques in the RR Garden name were reissued by the concerned bank. Radha requested the police to examine the cheques, handwriting, bank records and other electronic evidence to establish how they were obtained and presented. She also alleged that the siblings were preventing her from accessing valuables and documents kept in her room. CHENNAI SEWAGE TRUCK CRASH KILLS SECURITY GUARD, DRIVER ARRESTED A 56-year-old security guard was killed after a sewage truck crashed into the compound wall of an apartment complex in Sholinganallur during the early hours of Saturday. Kirupal, who worked as a security guard at the complex, was sitting inside the security cabin when the truck rammed into the wall. Police said the sewage truck was travelling along the road near the apartment complex when its driver swerved to the right to avoid colliding with another truck on the left side of the road. The sewage truck then crashed into the compound wall. The impact caused the wall and the security cabin to collapse on Kirupal. He died on the spot. Pallikaranai Traffic Investigation Wing police reached the scene after receiving information about the incident. They recovered the body and sent it to a govt hospital for postmortem examination. FAMILY OF CUSTODIAL DEATH VICTIM JUMPS INTO CM CONVOY BREACHING THE SECURITY DETAIL AT SECRETARIAT Relatives of a man who died in police custody attempted to approach Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s convoy and submit a petition at the Secretariat entrance on Thursday. Police personnel deployed for security responded immediately, and they detained those who breached the security and attempted to reach Chief Minister Vijay. The incident occurred on Thursday morning when the Chief Minister’s convoy was proceeding from his residence in Neelankarai to the Secretariat. More than 100 people had gathered near the inner entrance gate hoping to meet the Chief Minister. Among them were Rajesh Kannan (50), his wife Anandhi (43), and relatives of their son Akash Delison. They sought to submit a petition alleging that Akash had died in police custody within the limits of Manamadurai police station in March this year. They claimed a case had been registered against six police personnel, but no action had been taken and sought transfer of the investigation to CB-CID. As the group crossed the barricades and entered the road, police personnel deployed for convoy security stopped them. Constable Muthuganesh of Tambaram City Armed Reserve, who was part of the lead vehicle, fell while intervening and suffered an abrasion on his left elbow. Police said Rajesh Kannan crossed the barricade after breaching the security and ran towards the convoy. Constable Ramkumar of Tondiarpet police station attempted to stop him, following which Kannan punched the constable in the chest, police said. Ramkumar later complained of chest pain and was rushed to govt hospital for first aid. The convoy reached the Secretariat portico at 10:02 am. CHENNAI CITY POLICE COMMISSIONER A AMALRAJ ASSUMES CHARGE ON FRIDAY A. Amalraj, a 1996-batch IPS officer, assumed charge as the Chennai City Police Commissioner on Friday morning following orders issued by the Tamil Nadu government. Amalraj formally took charge around 8.30 am at the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office after signing official documents in his chamber. Senior police officers were present during the brief function. Soon after assuming office, Amalraj proceeded to Raj Bhavan in Guindy to review security arrangements for the swearing-in ceremony of MLAs Shajahan of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Vanni Arasu of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK). The two legislators were inducted into the state cabinet of the TVK-led government headed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The state government issued the transfer orders on Thursday. Additional Chief Secretary K. Manivasan directed the officers concerned to assume charge immediately. As part of the reshuffle, Additional Director General of Police Abhin Dinesh Modak was transferred and posted as head of the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID), replacing T.S. Anbu. Amalraj previously served in various senior positions in the Tamil Nadu police department, including Commissioner of Police in Tambaram, Coimbatore and Tiruchi cities.

POLICE LAUNCH HUNT AFTER GANG VANDALISES SHOP IN KOLATHUR Police launched a hunt for a group of men who pelted stones at a grocery shop and a house in Kolathur on Sunday night following a dispute over payment for cakes. The gang also went on a rampage and damaged some parked vehicles. The incident occurred around 10.30 pm at Ambedkar Nagar Fourth Street, where Maripandi (46) ran a grocery shop in front of his house. Police said two men who were under the influence of alcohol came to the shop and asked for six cakes priced at ₹20 each. The men said they had ₹100 and refused to pay the ₹120 bill. When Maripandi asked them to pay ₹110, they abused him and created a ruckus. They then called their friends to the spot. Fearing further trouble, Maripandi closed the shop and went inside his house. The group subsequently picked up stones from the road and hurled them at the shop and into his house and yelled using obscene language. The gang also damaged some of the parked vehicles on the road and created a ruckus. Rajamangalam police registered a case based on Maripandi’s complaint. HISTORYSHEETER ROWDY ARRESTED; FAMILY ATTACKED POLICEMEN A 26-year-old history-sheeter was arrested during a ganja raid in Pulianthope after police seized narcotic substances from his residence. Police also registered a separate case against his relatives for attacking officers during the operation. A video of the altercation later circulated on social media. Acting on a tip-off about the sale of ganj in the Pulianthope, a team from the Basin Bridge Police Station, led by Sub-Inspector Krishnakumar and other personnel, conducted a raid on a house in Gandhi Nagar Fifth Street on Sunday night. The house belonged to Nandakumar, 26, who is listed as a history-sheeter by the police. During the search, officers seized 29 packets of ganja weighing a total of 10 grams and six syringes from the premises. Police said women present in the house initially objected to the search and attempted to prevent officers from carrying out the raid. After Nandakumar was arrested and police attempted to take him into custody, his mother and other female relatives assaulted the officers. According to police, the officers used force to protect themselves and bring the situation under control. A video showing the confrontation between police personnel and the family members subsequently went viral on social media platforms. Nandakumar was taken to the Basin Bridge Police Station, where a case was registered against him under relevant provisions relating to possession of narcotic substances. He was inquired further. In a related development, Nandakumar’s mother, Meena, went to the police station and demanded her son’s release. Police said she injured her wrist with a razor blade during the protest and argued with officers inside the station premises. She was later sent away after intervention by police personnel. The Basin Bridge police registered a separate case against Nandakumar’s relatives for obstructing and assaulting police personnel during the raid.

'COUPLE' ARRESTED FOR CREATING A RUCKUS The Mylapore police registered a case under Sections 296(b), 132, 125, and 351(2) of BNS and arrested Chandramohan and Dhanalakshmi. The couple will be remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday. An investigation officer said Chandra Mohan studied BSc hotel management and worked for about three years at a hotel in Coimbatore and another leading hotel on St Marys Road in Alwarpet. After working at a club in Velachery for a few years, he shifted his business to selling second-hand cars from 2017 onwards. During questioning, the arrested Dhanalakshmi told police that she had met Chandramohan while studying at a tailoring institute through a common friend. The woman Dhanalakshmi was married to a mechanic and the couple has a 20-year-old daughter and a 17-year-old son. They lived at a house in Mylapore, police said. Chandramohan was also married and had two children, ages 16 and 12. He lived with his family in Velachery.
