3am this morning at Eda Plaza, Jabi, Abuja. A... fire broke out and we the traders could do nothing but stand helplessly and watch our shops, goods and livelihoods burn. The Nigerian Fire Service was present, but the fire continued for hours without being effectively contained as they did not have the proper equipments to fight the fire. Around 6am, Julius Berger finally arrived with a fire truck and helped bring the situation under control. The fact that Julius Berger, a private construction company, had to arrive around 6am with a fire truck and successfully tackle a fire that had been burning since around 3am tells you everything you need to know. And we will put forward a ballot measure in November to ensure that transfer tax is paid on properties in foreclosure so we can offset revenue impacts.
