I’ve been banging on about this for half a decade - bacon causes cancer, it’s rated as a class 1 carcinogen by the World Health Organisation - alongside tobacco. Yes, tobacco. We control tobacco with a branding and advertising ban, hideous pictures of diseased organs on the packaging and we keep it behind roller shutter doors. Out of sight in shops. Bacon on the other hand, sits in consumer friendly, inviting, branded shrink wrapped - openly in shop. Maybe with a picture of a happy pig face. It has no health warnings, it’s presented as safe by the very fact that it is presented in this way. When will we have a government that stands up to the big food lobby and gives us proper food advice, based on the science - and regulates the presentation of harmful foods, like meat and dairy, with health warnings. The Tories might refer to this as the 'nanny state’ - it’s actually the state doing its job, protecting us. And the Tories have their own version anyway - maybe you’d call it the ‘dark nanny state’ - ten years ago they regulated to force schools to feed meat and dairy to our kids - at the behest of big business interests no doubt. People first. That’s the right approach.

A tiny 2% tax on wealth above £10m, is a drop in the ocean for just 20k Brits - but would raise £24Bn with which we could do so much. Rachel Reeves needs to be brave, understand the people want this - even millionaires want this and there’s nothing to fear. If we think there is let’s change our tax rules and make them like the USA - citizens pay tax back home wherever in the world they choose to live. Problem solved.

Cars are an essential, planes are for holidays. Of course it’s not that black and white - but I’ll tell you what is, zero fuel duty on flying and big fuel duty on driving. That’s wrong. Our tax system needs to be more fair, logical and progressive. The budget is an opportunity to make a start. Put taxes where they belong - on the luxuries and take them off the things we need just to live.

Farming takes up 75% of Britain's land. If we all went vegan, we could give back to nature 75% of that land - which is half our entire country. We grow plants to feed animals to feed people in a system of incredible inefficiency. And as a result, we've eaten Britain's wildlife out of house and home.

Tice is an idiot. One thousand people dead in two months from extreme heat and he says - enjoy it. One hundred thousand will die in Europe this summer. Tice says see the positives….. He lives in a bubble disconnected from ordinary people, the reality of wild fires, burning homes, lost homes - five heatwaves in one summer (so far). 1976 was nothing like this. The science is clear, our carbon emissions have driven atmospheric carbon to levels last seen millions of years ago - mass burning of fossil fuels in just 200 hundred years is the cause. This is not normal. It makes sense to reduce those emissions as fast as possible. That’s not arrogance that’s common sense. Celebrating better wine off the back of deadly weather events is arrogance, wrapped up in stupidity - presented as populism. Oh and desalination works in the Middle East because they have access to dirt cheap and abundant fossil fuels in those countries - it’s the most expensive way to make water and guaranteed to send our water bills through the roof - if we had to adopt it at scale. Last week, Rees-Mogg claimed that tax breaks aren’t subsidies and challenged me to do my homework. Well, I did. Turns out, the Subsidy Control Act 2022, a piece of Brexit legislation, was passed when you were Brexit minister and it clearly states tax breaks are subsidies... Time to brush up on your own laws Jacob Rees-Mogg - will you now admit that in fact it was you who was wrong?

So what on earth was Nadhim Zahawi thinking when he went on Good Morning Britain the other day and claimed that I funded Count Binface's Clacton campaign - to the very specific tune of £180k. I mean first it’s a tiny drop in Reform’s dirty ocean. But most vexing, it’s an entirely false claim, based on nothing as far as I can see, just a convenient fantasy. God knows why Nadhim Zahawi thought this fantasy might help cover Farage’s Clacton blushes - I mean he struggled to beat a Bin (no offence to the Count). But here’s the thing - if Reform happily make up shit like this, what else are they claiming that is simply, totally untrue. ITV News carried the original claims and set out a correction today - have to say it was a bit half hearted.

Climate denial is dangerous, it sows confusion and doubt and holds back the urgent actions we need to take. That's why I've suggested it ought to be illegal, it causes great harm.
