I interviewed a guy worth $247M on Moneywise, Onyi Odunukwe. He started Glo Tanning, built it to 7 franchises, then sold 5 for $2.3M in 2018. That 5 turned grew to over 100 locations he owns now (as well as 26 other businesses). He spends $75-100k a month. - Has a full-time driver for $60k a year. - Has a live-in nanny for $50k a year. - Has a house in Dallas and a house in Tampa, and is building a 3rd house now (and buying a ranch). He said he was offered $250M for a 49% stake in Glo and turned it down. Full episode available everywhere.

Craig from Craigslist turned down $11B and I asked him why on Moneywise. Since then he: - Gave away $570M, and plans on $1B before he dies - Funds NYPD bomb squad gear the city budget can't cover - Funds the AI research of the cardiologist who caught his heart condition He has no car, no fancy watches, rides the subway. I asked him what he actually spends money on. - Books - Streaming services - Gadgets to make his desk tidier His big upgrade this year was going from $50 Skechers to $80 Skechers. Craig never intended on Craigslist becoming what it is today. The amount of money it's worth presents what he calls a "moral dilemma" This episode is all about what someone does when they're given more money than most people in the world will ever see in their lives, but whose values are directly opposed to amassing that much wealth in the first place.

Hampton anonymously surveyed 250 founders and CEOs about how much money they make. In this episode of Moneywise I walk through the split between bootstrapped and venture-backed founders, where 39% of bootstrapped founders took over $500k in additional compensation and not one VC backed founder reported more than $300k. I dig into: - IRS rules around "tiny salary, big distributions" advice - Credit card points, vehicles, and real estate practices - What senior teams get paid (often more than the CEO) I don't usually upload these to X. Trying something different this time!

Patrick and Kathy Terry started a burger stand (P. Terry’s) selling burgers for $1.60. It now has nearly 40 locations and does $200M in annual revenue. And the Terrys are phenomenal human being. So they give interest free loans to their employees. They have loaned their hourly employees over $900,000. Interest free. Total unpaid after 20 years: only $5,000. Patrick Terry told me on Moneywise how it started.

I interviewed the founders of P. Terry’s on Moneywise, Patrick and Kathy Terry. They opened a 500-square-foot burger stand in South Austin in 2005, 90 days into their marriage, selling $1.60 hamburgers. Today they’ve got 37 locations, 1,800 employees, and do $150-200M a year growing 20%+. In 2016 a buyer offered them $70-100M. They said no. The only money they’ve ever taken in 21 years: just under $10M. - $900K in interest-free loans to hourly employees - Only $5K ever defaulted - Every decision runs through the “Maggie rule” (woman on the grill for 21 years) Instead of selling, they’re giving the whole company to their employees through an Employee Ownership Trust. Fewer than 100 American companies have ever done this. Full episode available everywhere.

My friend Tibo came on Moneywise with a distribution strategy I hadn't heard before. When building TweetHunter, he had no audience. So he created creative investors — 17 influencers who each got 0.1% of annual profits. For every single launch, 17 people were financially motivated to post, retweet, and amplify. It worked so well he replicated it on Taplio. Both sold for $8M. He now does $1M/month across his portfolio using the same distribution logic.
