Last night, the Government announced that school funding will only rise by 1.9% per pupil in April, down from 2.7% promised in July. This is a cut of £370m - £55,000 for average secondary & £12,000 for average primary. Schools cannot take any more cuts. Please listen to my message & share with colleagues

Unbelievable scenes in London today. In excess of 50,000 teachers demonstrating for fair funding and pay restoration. As Kevin Courtney said today "We strike for our children"... This could've been avoided, had Gillian Keegan followed 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 + 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 and made a meaningful offer.

Been giving evidence at the Education Select Committee today. SEND Training is important. But the £200m budget equates to £264 per teacher. Training alone wont lead to more inclusive schools. Teachers need smaller class sizes, additional support and time to implement what they learn.

Yesterday at the Education Select Committee, I was asked about behaviour in schools. The truth? Behaviour challenges are rising because schools are having to act like a fourth emergency service - with ever reducing resources. What’s needed: • sustained investment in support staff and services • a more flexible curriculum • and let’s use falling pupil numbers to reduce class sizes Schools can’t keep doing more with less.

Today I gave evidence on teacher recruitment and retention to the Education Select Committee, followed by an appearance on Politics Live. So how is the government doing on its pledge to recruit 6,500 teachers? The headline is this: we have 2,500 more special and secondary teachers - but 3,000 fewer primary teachers. Overall, there are now fewer teachers in the system. What does that mean in practice? England’s student/teacher ratio is now among the highest in the OECD. What needs to change? We need proper funding and sustained investment. Teaching workloads must be compatible with family life, and pay needs to be corrected to reflect the profession’s value. But there’s more. Teaching is a predominantly female profession, and government policy should finally recognise that reality. A coherent set of policies on menopause, endometriosis and maternity is long overdue. Matching educator maternity pay to that of DfE civil servants (28 weeks’ full pay) would be a good place to start.

We should be unapologetic in wanting a qualified teacher for every child. CEO pay of £500k is unacceptable. Fair treatment for overseas trained teachers.

Recalling the one speech that sends shivers down my spine today... MLK gave this speech the night before his assassination. He was speaking in support of the Memphis Sanitation Strike and against injunctions preventing further protests. Regardless of your views on Monarchy, the rights to freedom of assembly, of expression and speech should unite us all. These rights are fundamental and must be defended.
