Lab, Con & LibDems today all agreed the decision by Weds Mids police to ban the Jewish fans is wrong, disgraceful etc, but nothing they can do because ‘operational independence’. Only Reform UK will change the law to put the police under the control of elected politicians.

Of course the PM’s position is untenable - but even more important we need to restore the fundamental principle that civil servants answer to ministers, and ministers to parliament. We only know about this vetting scandal because the Guardian exposed the fact officials didn’t tell the PM, and the PM didn’t ask, and then misled the House. Blame applies equally and it all needs to change.

Of course the PM’s position is untenable - but even more important we need to restore the fundamental principle that civil servants answer to ministers, and ministers to parliament. This morning the Leadbeater Bill committee voted to let Clause 1 go through unamended - having rejected safeguards to protect the mentally ill, disabled people, those influenced or encouraged by others or those seeking assisted suicide to save their family money. We were told at 2R the committee would improve and strengthen the bill. Not so far.
