"We cannot leave the security of Europe in the hands of voters in Wisconsin every 4 years" says France's Europe Minister "Let's get out of collective denial. Europeans must take their destiny into their own hands, regardless of who is elected 🇺🇸president"

German MEP Damian Boeselager, vice chair of the 🇪🇺Parliament's economy committee, warns that Trump has a kill switch to turn off Europe's economy. "Not every explosion makes a loud boom, but last Friday, I could definitely feel the earth tremble. Because Trump actually pressed a 'red button'. He issued his export control directive to stop Anthropic giving access to its best AI models to Europeans." "Colleagues, this is a huge middle finger towards Europe, and it tells us two very important things. First, Trump can and will cut us out of AI's foundational models if he feels like it. Which could, by the way, kill 99 % of our AI industry right now, which builds on them." "And second, and much more fundamentally, Trump has a 'red button' for almost all aspects of our lives. He can stop us from paying because we depend on Visa and Mastercard. He can stop us from using our phones because we depend on Google and Apple, for messaging friends, WhatsApp, or even getting treatments at hospitals or booking trains because of Amazon Web Services." "Colleagues, let's be courageous, invite Anthropic to move to Europe and build our own foundational models. And let's not sign a trade deal that makes us dependent."

In a surprise move, Italy has tonight joined Belgium in its opposition to sending Russia's frozen assets to Ukraine - asking for alternative options at next week's 🇪🇺summit. Meanwhile, Brussels was informed that the new 🇺🇸peace deal draft says Ukraine will joint the EU in a year

It's the scandal that everyone in Brussels is talking about. The EU's former foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini (also former 🇮🇹foreign minister) was taken into custody following dawn raids on the EU's foreign ministry, the College of Europe and private homes yesterday.

The centre-left German government is reintroducing border checks at *all* its land borders with 9 🇪🇺Schengen countries. The drastic move, likely in response to the far-right's win in Eastern🇩🇪 last month, could cause a domino effect with major economic implications for the EU.

Today the "E5" (🇩🇪🇫🇷🇬🇧🇮🇹🇵🇱) agreed to launch an initiative to produce their own low-cost aerial defences - drones and the ability to shoot down drones - without American support. The E5 is a relatively new term that we're going to be hearing a lot more of going forward.

Mark Rutte's claim that Russia is capable of launching and sustaining an imminent invasion of the European Union in the short term is a fiction with a purpose. It's meant to lock Europeans into inertia, to discourage them from developing independent European command and control and instead just increase spending (on US weapons) under a NATO-only framework. <Watch full video: In yesterday's video I argued that it doesn’t matter if the US pulls out of NATO on paper or not. Even if Congress forces Trump to stay in, his words show they have already left and NATO is indeed now a paper tiger without the US security guarantee. As the former Danish MP Rasmus Jarlov has noted, "as long as we keep Ukraine from falling, Russia is not a threat to us in the short term.” Russia is exhausted at the moment from the Ukraine War. They absolutely have the intention to invade the EU, but we are some years away from that. That means, unlike what Rutte is telling us, Europe does have time to urgently and rapidly build a common defence without America. If we listen to Mark Rutte and do nothing because "there is no alternative to NATO" (Rutte) and "there is no NATO without the US" (Kallas), we are leaving ourselves as sitting ducks when Russia eventually invades and the US does not defend us. NATO is already dead. To save itself, Europe must end its NATO delusion and rebuke Mark Rutte’s suicidal vision for this continent. Europe must move on from the American protectorate - urgently.

PM Keir Starmer left Brussels yesterday without any progress on tangibly changing the 🇬🇧🇪🇺post-#Brexit relationship, because he didn't come with any tangible ideas. On the EU side, they're growing impatient at what they see as an overly cautious attitude toward domestic optics.

EU leaders have given up on trying to convince Orban to end his veto on the €90bn 🇺🇦loan, after trying for 90 minutes. The assumption is he will not relent until after the 🇭🇺election on 12 April. So will they move to Plan B (formerly known as Plan A): using 🇷🇺frozen assets?

🇺🇦President Zelensky is about to enter the #EUCO summit here on the red carpet along with the 27 🇪🇺national leaders. But all eyes will be on the one who travelled the least far. 🇧🇪PM Bart De Wever is in the hot seat as he continues to block sending Russian frozen assets to Kyiv.

Last night's failure to agree on giving Russia's frozen assets to Ukraine was a bad look for the EU. But the Plan B that they came up with, #EurobondsForUkraine, could actually be better because: 1⃣Money arrives faster 2⃣It's legally unquestionable 3⃣It can be done again

European leaders yesterday signed up to a monumental (and probably unrealistic) military spending target demanded by Trump. Yet at #EUCO today, a discussion on how to do it is expected to be brief because "they already talked about it at NATO". EU defence efforts have stalled.

The big news tonight may be the political drama in France, but it's important to note that according to exit polls, what happened in France has not happened at pan-European level Exit polls say far-right gains are in line with trajectory of last 20 years. Centrist majority holds

🇺🇸Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is telling European ministers here at #NATO summit in Brussels that the US is turning over security control to Europeans and ending "dependency". But at same time, Trump is taking control of ending the Ukraine war and shutting out Europeans.🤔

🇪🇺high court ruled today EU countries must recognise same-sex marriages conducted by other member states in their national law. Big implications to the ruling, which could mean that gay people living in Eastern EU simply need to have a ceremony in the west to be married at home.

The #Mercosur FTA between 🇪🇺 & South America looks set to pass a vote tomorrow now that it has Italy's backing. The FTA's opponents 🇫🇷🇵🇱 will be outvoted. 🇫🇷President Macron has a tough choice to make. Will he -Take the politically easy route by voting no so he can tell French farmers he tried to kill it but was outvoted or -Help the French farmers by extracting concessions for his yes vote but face their political wrath A no vote achieves nothing for the farmers because Mercosur will happen either way. A yes vote with concessions extracted will help them - but they're unlikely to thank him for it. The best choice for domestic politics is clear. But it doesn't match with the best policy choice. BTW it's also possible there could be some surprises in store during tomorrow's vote. Maybe Meloni changes her mind. Or maybe we can get an unexpected coalition of 🇫🇷🇵🇱🇦🇹🇭🇺🇮🇪🇳🇱 plus one other surprise to kill Mercosur even with Italy voting yes.

The figures for the supposed tariffs that the US is "reciprocating" against seem to be drawn out of thin air. For instance, Trump claimed the EU imposes 39% tariffs on US imports. The figure is actually 1%. 🇺🇸 says they're calculating non-tariff barriers but won't show their work. It appears different standards are being used for different countries based on politics. For instance, Russia is exempt from this trade war. This makes an air-tight legal case for the EU to say these "reciprocal tariffs" are in fact arbitrary tariffs, Commission officials believe. And it should enable them to slap retaliatory tariffs on US services, which could cripple US banks and big tech.
