During Operation Desert Storm, F-117s flew some of the most dangerous missions of the war, striking command bunkers, air defense networks, communication centers, and strategic targets in the heart of Iraq. Despite flying only a small fraction of coalition sorties, they delivered a disproportionate share of precision strikes against the most heavily defended targets. Then came 1999. A Serbian air defense battery managed to shoot down an F-117, the only combat loss of the type. Instead of ending the stealth era, it proved something else: Even when the world knew stealth aircraft existed, finding and engaging them remained extraordinarily difficult. The F-117 was never built to dominate dogfights. It was built to reach targets that other aircraft could not. And it succeeded so completely that every modern stealth fighter, from the F-22 to the F-35, owes part of its existence to the Nighthawk. Few aircraft changed military history.
