I used to write off โmindsetโ as woo-woo hippie shit. but the more time I've spent with successful people, the more I see the same habits: meditation, journaling, affirmations Tobi Lรผtke (the guy who built Shopify into a $180 billion company btw) said affirmations are the dumbest trick that works: โif you tell yourself or write down a hundred times something about yourself, that writes it into the neural frontal cortex at such a deep level that your brain will start reconciling you to thatโฆ โฆ it's not like a placebo. it's actually like you just actively change your neural frontal cortex in this moment. so, I use this oftenโ Iโve said it before and Iโll say it one million times again: the words you speak matter > write down your goals > communicate them repeatedly > speak things into existence Iโve been saying beehiiv ๐ will become a multibillion dollar company (as a fact) before we had $1k in revenue

fully remote over mandatory in-office is still a hill I will absolutely die on: > if we only hired people from LA, we probably would have failed years ago > we find THE most talented person for the job - I donโt care where theyโre located > itโs archaic to expect people to move their families to expensive cities just for a job > we don't pay for an office (usually one of the biggest items on the P&L) > I hate commuting. you hate commuting. everyone hates commuting. > colleagues will often spend 3 months in Europe / Bangkok / wherever over the summer > plus, there's a lot of baggage that comes with 130 bodies in one location that we just don't deal with I can count on two hands how many people have voluntarily left the company in 5 years, & remote culture is a big part of that

a short (& true) horror story for anyone who is thinking about starting a company: I didn't take a single day off for the first 2 years of building beehiiv ๐ and the day I finally did, GoDaddy almost killed the company > I was in Cabo for a friend's bachelor party (very not sober) > first weekday not on my laptop in 2 years > Slack starts blowing up on my phone re customerโs websites not working > no one on the team could find a bug or figure out what the issue was > turns out that one of our users sent a sketchy link that was flagged by the godaddy the security team > I missed the email from GoDaddy about the incident (I was playing beer pong) > GoDaddy suspended our entire account > which also took down all of our customerโs websites > I sobered up pretty quickly and tried to get in contact with anyone from their team > entire bachelor party went out to dinner without me, I was stuck on customer support with their overseas team > started stalking everyone on LinkedIn who worked at GoDaddy > I sent an emergency email to all of our investors about the incident > at 2am I finally got through to someone on the phone who would unblock our account > we migrated off GoDaddy the next day Starting a company is the most rewarding thing you can do (in all senses of the word). It is equally the most terrifying and stressful thing youโll ever do. No matter what the circumstance is, the buck stops with you. 2 big lessons for me through this episode: 1/ know every point of failure in your stack 2/ never take a day off
