He saw the scene of Godzilla attacking a movie theater and decided to make that his whole personality.

Because that's how the films established him. Moving from a force of nature in 2014 with a heroic edge to an outright hero and the key to coexistence from Aftershock - Dominion (2019-2021). Because New Empire still talks about him like he's an unambiguous hero who does no wrong.

But they baked this into the movie's plot and themes. Godzilla: King of the Monsters is about learning to set aside your human ego and strive for coexistence with nature. Dr. Serizawa does exactly this, setting aside his hatred for nukes to save Godzilla. In return, Godzilla teams up with humanity and saves the world. This scene was pivotal for the themes of the film and for the characters. It completes the transformation of Mark Russell's perspective. It also comes with a high price, the loss of Dr. Serizawa.

I 100% get how people can view Godzilla as a "destroyer" in the current MV films. They say Godzilla's a good guy, while positioning him as the antagonist of GVK, having him kill civilians, having him kill Tiamat without cause, & having him go after Kong (the hero) once again in New Empire. It's very much a case of "show VS tell." They TELL us he's a "hero," the "key to coexistence," but didn't develop this post KOTM, opting to SHOW his more "neutral/aggressive" personality.

Slow it down. Godzilla explodes her house, she pops out to see what's going on, roars, and Godzilla charges her, causing her to respond. & Every argument to defend Godzilla's actions in this scene is quite literally Hydra's plotline in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. "He's the King of the Monsters & nature's balance. What he says goes. She should have backed down because he's the alpha." "In the past, she defended her territory against him rather than submitting. She was stockpiling radiation and could have become a future threat, so he needed to take care of her." Truth is, it's an action beat meant to entertain younger audiences that we were never meant to think about this deeply. The reason I do is to illustrate a point about Godzilla's character writing and consistency changing between films.

This issue fans keep seeing the MonsterVerse run into with WinGoji VS Gare/DougheGoji is that 2014 establishes Godzilla as neutral, but KOTM expands upon this by revealing him to be as heroic as he was in the 1960s/70s films. The comics and novelizations around the time double down on this, & from 2014 until 2021, Godzilla was seen as primarily a HERO. But, in GVK, they emphasize that Godzilla will, almost at random (like in Hong Kong), go heel & destroy things, kill people that he could have avoided, & attack innocent heroic or neutral monsters for his own personal gain. Is it more like his Toho portrayal? Sure. But it abandons the progress and expansion of the character made in King of the Monsters. Oh, hey, I made a video all about this. You should watch it:

I'm still amazed to live in a world where I've seen King Kong fight Mechagodzilla.

Takashi Yamazaki has demonstrated through Godzilla the Ride: Giant Monsters Ultimate Battle & Godzilla The Ride: Great Clash that he has a fantastic sense of action direction, Kaiju fight choreography, and dynamic cinematography, making me so excited to see what kind of amazing sequences we'll get if Godzilla Minus Zero features an enemy monster for Godzilla to fight!

KOTM tells us it's GODZILLA who hasn't been seen since 2014. The Senate is aware of other Titans under Monarch's protection, as is the public. They know they are "rising." Serizawa even says "Others... like the MUTO," suggesting the Senate would KNOW what others he means.

Which I'm fine with at times, but it's such a departure from Godzilla being treated with nothing but reverence, majesty, and mystique in the first two films. He was divine! He a godly presence that was unfathomable, and yet somehow there was recognition and companionship in his eyes. 😭😭😭 Oh well. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters absolutely nails this on the head.
